Tryouts preview AMICC fall soccer season
The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s fall recreational soccer season officially got started with tryouts last week for players ages 4-14. Players were put through a series of drills to assess their ability under the watchful eyes of the volunteer coaches.
After the tryout sessions, coaches adjourned to the “war room” to draft their respective teams. Teams are beginning practice this week and looking forward to the schedule of competition that will begin Sept. 19.
The annual kick-off-the-season spaghetti dinner will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in the center gym. There players will receive their uniforms and game schedules, while enjoying a delicious spaghetti dinner with family and friends, donated once again by the Beach Bistro.

AMICC golf outing scheduled
The third-annual AMICC golf outing at IMG Golf and Country Club is coming up on Friday, Oct. 14. Cost for the golf outing is $150 per person, which also includes range balls and the awards banquet. For an additional $30, participants can enter a $10,000 hole-in-one contest, putting contest and receive five raffle tickets. And non-golfers, they are invited to attend the dinner for only $45.

Bowling benefit results announced
The 21st annual O’Connor Bowling Challenge took place Aug. 27 at AMF Lanes in Bradenton.
Dan France bowled a 222 to take the men’s top score for the evening, while Erin Kosfield’s 182 was the women’s top score. For the second straight year, Bryan Fritz had the men’s top series score with a 594, while Kosfield took women’s top series at 468. Ramon Camacho had the men’s low score of 58, while Megan Cusack took the low score for the women with a 38.
Horseshoe news
Jeff Moore and Ron Pepka were the only team to win the requried three pool-play victories and were the Sept. 3 champs during horeseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horesshoe pits. Steve Doyle and Jerry Disbrow defeated George McKay and Sam Samuels 21-11 in the battle for second place.
Two teams emerged from pool play during Aug. 31 horseshoe action. The team of Tim Sofran and Norm Good defeated Sam Samuels and Tom Skoloda 23-18 in a see-saw affair that saw six lead changes.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club women played a nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match Aug. 30. Barb Harrold torched the course with a 10-under-par 22 to win first place by eight strokes over Christina Mason, Meredith Slavin and Tootie Wagner, who finished in a three-way tie for second place at 2-under-par 30.
