Soccer jamboree day kicks off fall soccer season

 

The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s adult soccer league kicked off Sept. 15 with four games, while the youth soccer program held off until Sept. 17 for a full day of mini games for kids in divisions for ages 4-17.

The recreational youth league gets going for real on Sept. 21 and continues until the end of November, when champions will be crowned in four age divisions.

The adult league got a competitive start when Jessie’s Island Store battled Don Meilner & Son Construction to a 3-3 tie in the season opener. Aaron Duduks, Robert McClughlin and Sean Sanders scored goals for Jessie’s, while Mike Brusso, Zach Gilliland and Amy Talucci notched goals for Meilner.

The second game of the evening saw Euphemia Haye take a 3-0 win over Florida Discount Sign behind two goals from Paul Heyward and one goal from Ryan Hogan.

Sato Real Estate grabbed a 5-2 victory over Island Pest Control in the third game of the evening behind a pair of goals from Matt Plummer and a goal apiece from Josh Sato, Rich Bell and Stephen Perry. Enrico Bissert scored both goals for Pest Control in the loss.

The final game of the night saw Ross Built roll past Wash Family Construction by a 7-3 score. Former Manatee High soccer player Emily Argeros and Greg Ross scored two goals apiece, while Eric Howe and Toby Wickland scored one goal each in the victory. Brett Laudicinia, Scott Macy and  Jessica Macy scored a goal each for Wash in the loss.

 

Adult basketball starts up, too

The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s adult basketball league got started with three games Sept. 13. The first game saw Agnelli Pool & Spa roll past Southern Greens by a 55-34 score. Aaron Duduks led the way for Agnelli with 35 points, while Nate Coleman added 14 points. Will Langston’s 4 points and 2 points from Tyler Krauss completed the Agnelli scoring in the victory. Kevin Austin and Robby Bennett scored 15 points apiece to lead Southern Greens, which also received 2 points apiece from Chuck McCracken and Wayne Grant in the loss.

Bowes Imaging edged the Sun 42-40 in the second game of the night behind 16 points from Tyler Bekkerus and 11 points from Mikeal Kasten. Nick Schweitzer’s 6 points, 5 points from Mark Templeton and 4 points from Steven Ayers rounded out the Bowes scoring in the win. Jarell Queensberry nailed six 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 22 points to lead the Sun in the loss. Larry Berkery added 11 points, while Chris Smith and Erica Smith chipped in with 2 points apiece in the loss.

The last game of the night saw Unique Mobile Detailing defeat Beach to Bay Construction 55-44. Jonathan Moss led the way with 21 points, while Justin Jones and Brent Moss added 9 points apiece. Ryan Moss chipped in with 7 points for 7 Mobile Detailing, which also received 4 and 3 points from Jason and Josh Sato respectively, while Lindsey Weaver completed the scoring with 2 points. Nick Diaz paced Beach to Bay with 19 points, while Scott Eason and Tommy Tyrell added 9 points apiece. Chuck Bucky, George Imes and Shawn Kaleta completed the scoring with 2 poins each in the loss.

 

Longboat Key Club hosts golf tourney

Longboat Key Club & Resort announced this week an inaugural First Reponders golf tournament to benefit the emergency response teams of Longboat Key and Sarasota and Manatee counties in remembrance of the events of 9/11.

“We all share in the pain and devastation of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. As we remember the victims and survivors of this national tragedy, I feel it is important we also honor and support the men and women who are the first responders in our own communities.” said Michael Well, general manager of Longboat Key Club & Resort.

The First Responders Tournament will be at Harbourside Golf Course at Longboat Key Club & Resort, Saturday, Oct. 1. There will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start with a maximum of 120 players. Entry fee is $100 per person and players may sign up individually or as a foursome.

Horseshoe news

Two teams emerged from pool play during Sept. 17 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Sam Samuels and Ron Pepka jumped out to a 13-2 lead before hanging on for an exciting 23-19 victory over Jeff Moore and George McKay.

Two teams qualified for the knockout round during Sept. 14 horseshoe action. Larry Livrago and John Johnson rolled past Jerry Disbrow and Ron Pepka by a 21-12 score.

Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.

There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.

 

Key Royale golf news

The women of the Key Royale Club played a nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match Sept. 13. Terry Westby and Joyce Brown both carded 4-under-par 28s to tie for first place. Three shots back in second were Liz Lang, Frankie Smith-Williams and Penny Williams at 1-under-par 31.  Sue Wheeler and Kathy Willis both carded 33s to finish in a tie for third place.
