Center soccer league Spirit Week winners shine
The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s Spirit Week competition to kick off the fall soccer season was a success — cheers all around — and the center announced winners for each age group.
Division III was deemed the most spirited age group as Gettel Toyota and West Coast Surf Shop really showed their team spirit, but The Feast pulled out the stops and won this competitive division.
Other winners include Island Dental Spa in the 4-5 instructional division and Tyler’s Ice Cream in the 6-7 instructional division. Eat Here in Division II, Mr. Bones in Division 1 and Ace Hardware in Premier Division also were named spirited winners.
Soccer is in full swing at the center, with games being played Monday through Friday evenings. A couple of teams already have distinguished themselves from the rest of the pack in their divisions. Gettel Toyota in Division III already has a 6-point lead in the standings with a 3-0 record, while Autoway Ford sits atop Division I with a 3-0 record. However, Wash Family Construction is only one victory behind in the standings.
Division II has a three-way tie for first place with three teams earning one victory thus far.
Gettel Toyota brought home a pair of easy victories last week in Division III, defeating The Feast 5-2 Sept. 27, and following that with a 7-1 win over Island Real Estate Sept. 28.
Allie Connelly led the way for Gettel Toyota during its win over The Feast, scoring three goals, while Daniel Fritz and Daniel Sentman each added one goal. Gerrardo Serrano led The Feast with a pair of goals in the loss.
Daniel Fritz and Josh Calhoun scored two goals apiece to lead Gettel in the 7-1 victory over IRE. Jack Barnes, Jack Groves and Daniel Sentman each added single goals for Gettel in the victory. Tyler Brewer scored the lone goal for IRE in the loss.
The other Division III game saw Island Pest Control roll West Coast Surf Shop by an 8-3 score Sept. 26. Julius Petereit scored five goals to lead the way, while Sean Rodriguez added three goals. David Daigle scored two goals for West Coast, which also received one goal from Luke Marvin in the loss.
Division II action saw a pair of shutout victories last week. Jen Crady Massage defeated LaPensee Plumbing 5-0 Sept. 27 behind a hat trick from Aiden Grumley. Cameron Pasco and Trent Shakleford completed the scoring with one goal each in the win.
LaPensee bounced back on Sept. 28 to record a 3-0 victory over Eat Here behind three goals from Sullivan Ferreira.
Autoway Ford took a 4-0 victory over Wash Family Construction in Division I action Sept. 28 behind three goals from Michael Latimer and one goal from Emma Peery.
Premier Division’s lone game of the week between its two competitors saw Ace Hardware take a 7-3 victory over Beach Bistro Sept. 26. Chandler Hardy led Ace with five goals, while Greg Moss and Jeremiah Goode notched one goal apiece in the win. Alex Burgess, Helio Gomez and Kyle Parsons scored one goal each in the loss.
Adult soccer action
Ross Built and Sato Real Estate took early control of the standings in the center’s adult soccer division with matching 3-0 records, but there’s still a lot of soccer to be played.
In action played Sept. 29, Ross Built remained undefeated thanks to a 5-2 win over Island Pest Control. Eric Howe led the way with two goals, while former Manatee Hurricane teammates Emily Argeros and Chrissy Rice scored one goal apiece. Greg Ross completed the Ross Built scoring. Enrico Bissert and Tony Fradukis led Island Pest Control with one goal apiece in the loss.
Sato kept pace with Ross thanks to three goals from Matt Plummer in a 5-1 win over FL Discount Sign. Jesse Brisson and Josh Sato added single goals in the victory. Kip Lalosh scored the lone goal for Discount Sign in the loss.
The adult game of the week had to be Wash Family Construction’s 4-3 win over Euphemia Haye. Scott Macy scored two goals for Wash, which also received single goals from Brent Laudicina and PJ Smargisso in the win. Tim Tedesco, Paul Hayward and another former MHS soccer player, Jamie Gregorich, scored one goal apiece in the loss.
The last game of the evening saw West Coast Air Conditioning take a 5-3 win over Don Meilner & Son Construction. Anthony Alfano and Damir Glavan led the way with two goals apiece, while Monica Simpson finished with one goal. Kim Terhern scored two goals to lead Meilner, which also received one goal in the loss from yet another former MHS player, Lindsey Weaver.
Basketball action, too
Coed adult basketball also is in full swing with three games a week played on Tuesday evenings. Unique Mobile Detailing is the team to beat thus far in the season with a perfect 3-0 record. Agnelli Pool & Spa and Southern Greens follow in the standings with 2-1 records. Bowes Imaging and Beach to Bay Construction both sit at 1-2, while the Sun remains winless on the season.
Unique Mobile Detailing showed why it’s on top with a 51-40 victory over Agnelli during Sept. 27 action. Jonathan Moss led the way with 20 points, while Brent Moss chipped in with 12 points in the victory. Aaron Duduks paced Agnelli with 17 points, while Frank Agnelli and Nate Coleman each added 8 points in the loss.
Southern Greens moved into a tie for second place thanks to a 46-39 victory over Sun. Robby Bennett led Southern Greens with 22 points, while Kevin Austin added 10 points and Wayne Grant finished with 8 in the victory. Jarell Quesenberry’s 21 points paced the Sun, which also received 12 poins from Larry Berkery in the loss.
Beach to Bay Construction earned its first win of the season by defeating Bowes Imaging 71-52 behind 26 points from Nick Diaz. Scott Eason added 17 points for Beach to Bay, which also received 12 points from George Imes, while Tommy Tyrell showed a nose for the basket in finishing with 10 points. Tyler Bekkerus led Bowes Imaging with 22 points, while Mikeal Kasten finished with 10 points in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Larry Livrago and John Johnston earned bragging rights during Sept. 28 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. They defeated the team of Jerry Disbrow and Norm Good by a 25-14 score.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
