AMICC NFL Flag Football continues season chiller
In spite of some cool weather, the Anna Maria Island Community Center NFL Flag Football League completed its second week and produced some stellar action in two of the three youth divisions. All the games in the 8-9 division were close, while the 13-16 division had two close games. The 10-12 division played four games last week, but all were blowouts.
The 8-9 division game of the week saw the Beach Bistro Vikings edge Southern Greens Jets 22-20 Jan. 13. Quarterback Nathan Hyman completed 10 of 11 passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns. Sean Rodriguez caught three passes for 36 yards, including a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Morgan Horesh ran for 29 yards while also adding 37 receiving yards, including a touchdown and a pair of extra points. Andrew Burgess completed the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown.
Hyman paced the Vikings defensive effort with five flag pulls. Rodriguez added one pull and an interception in the victory.
Daniel Fritz led the Jets with 63 rushing yards, 15 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Jackie Schlossberg added 25 rushing yards and a two-point conversion. Dalton Guffrie finished with 30 rushing yards, while Luke Marvin added 45 passing yards.
Guffrie led the defense with a pair of interceptions, while Fritz had a team-high four flag pulls in the loss.
The 13-16 division game of the week saw the Integrity Sound Redskins slip past First American Bank Ravens 33-27 Jan. 9. Quarterback Justin Carder completed 18 of 24 passes for 217 yards. Joey Carder added five pass completions for another 124 yards, while also catching eight passes for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Joseph Andruzzi led all receivers with 128 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Gilman completed the scoring with a pair of extra points to go along with 35 receiving yards. Gilman paced the Redskin defense with four flag pulls, while Justin Carder added two pulls in the victory.
Jack Shinn paced the offense for the Ravens, completing 13 of 17 passes for 180 and three touchdown passes. Pierce Hogan scored three offensive touchdowns and a pair of extra points to go along with 133 receiving yards. Chris Johnson added 44 receiving yards and an extra point in the loss.
Shin led all defenders with six flag pulls, while Hogan added two pulls and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.
The closest game in the 10-12 division was Eat Here Bears 24-8 victory over Cedars Tennis Resort Seahawks Jan. 11. Jacob Quinn passed for 15 yards, ran for 24 yards and caught one pass for five yards while scoring two touchdowns to lead the Bears offense. Dylan Doyle added one touchdown while running for 32 yards and added one reception for 10 yards. Jean-Paul Russo finished with 26 all-purpose yards on offense and led the Bears defensive effort with seven flag pulls and a quarterback sack. Tyler Yavalar intercepted three passes and took one to the house to complete the Bears scoring.
Leo Rose passed for 61 yards including a touchdown to Anni Walter in the loss. Noah Heskin added 40 receiving yards to round out the Seahawk offense. Trevor Meek led the Seahawk defense with five flag pulls, while Rose and Langley Rutger each finished with three pulls.
Key Royale golf news
It was another busy week of golf at the Key Royale Club, 700 Key Royale Drive, Holmes Beach. Members teamed up for a nine-hole, coed handicap tournament Jan. 13. The team of Frankie Smith-Williams, Joyce Brown, Jerry Brown and Dave Kruger combined to card a 23-under-par 105 and take first place by one stroke over the team of Jane Winegarden, Rose Slomba and Tom Warda.
The men played an 18-hole, two-best-balls-of-foursome match – Jan. 11. The team of Art Hibbs, Bob Dickenson, Jim McVicar and Pieter Thomasson took first place with a 26-under-par 102. One shot back in second place was the team of Danny Hayes, Joe Latorre, Bill Gallagher and Andy Barber.
The men played a nine-hole modified-Stableford match – Jan. 10. Quentin Talbert’s plus-5 was the top individual score with Buddy Foy in second at plus-4. The team of Art McMillen, Greg Shorten, Wade Ladue and Ron Pritchard won the team play with a plus-4 score.
The women took the course Jan. 10 for a nine-hole, low-net and low-gross score in-flight match. Judy Squire fired a 2-under-par 30 to take first place in Flight A. Her score was one shot better than second-place finisher Cindy Miller.
Ginny Nunn’s 5-under-par 27 was the low net score of the day and she earned first place in Flight B, while Judy Ward carded a 3-under-par 29 to take first place in Flight C.
Markie Ksiazek matched Nunn’s low-net score 27 and came out on top of Flight D.
Cindy Miller’s 40 gave her low-gross score of the day and first place in Flight A. Christina Mason took low gross in Flight B with a 42, while Judy Ward finished with a 46 to take first place in Flight C. Markie Ksiazek’s 47 gave her the top gross score in Flight D.
Sue Little had a chip-in birdie on number four and birdied number eight, while Sara Falk and Terry Westby each had chipins on the day.
On Jan. 9, the men played a two-best-balls-of-foursome match over nine holes. The team of Pieter Thomasson, Jim McVicar, Neil Hammer and Gerald Taylor combined to card a 14-under-par 50 to take first place. Joe Dickenson, Al Hibbs, Al Kaiser and Wade Ladue matched the 52 carded by Tom Lewis, Harold McKammish, Jim Auch and Tom O’Brien to finish in a tie for second place.
Dick Eichorn fired a 5-under-par 59 to take first place in the 18-hole, individual-low-net match Jan. 7. Jim Thorton and Ed Havlik tied for second place at 2-under-par 62.
Horseshoe news
John Crawford and Art Kingstad were the only team to earn the recquisite three pool-play wins and were the outright champs during Jan. 14 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits.
Jerry Disbrow and Bob Brown were the outright champs during Jan. 11 horseshoe action after being the only team to earn three pool-play victories.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
