Summer volleyball title ‘signed,’ Super Bowl delayed, hole-in-one hitter
The Anna Maria Island Community Center Adult Volleyball League closed its summer season Sept. 9 with championship night at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Florida Discount Signs signed off with the title, following a sweep of two close games over Sugar Beach Digital 25-20 and 25-23. Jordan Demers and Ryan Moss did it in impressive fashion, playing with only two players while Sugar Beach Digital fielded five players. Three FDS players were absent.
The center’s NFL league Super Bowl match-up scheduled for last week between The Feast and Slim’s Place was postponed thanks to a friendly decision by Feast not to force Slim’s to forfeit for lack of players. The game will be played at the center at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18.
Key Royale golf news
The men got out for a few rounds of golf during the past week at Key Royale Club, starting with a two-best-balls-of-foursome match Sept. 8. The team of Dennis Shavey, Ron Robinson and Fred Meyer matched the 5-under-par 27 carded by Peter Thomassen, Charlie Knopp and Matt Behan for a tie for first place.
The men returned for an afternoon nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match. Tom McDonnell grabbed first place with a score of plus-3 while Quentin Talbert, Blake Ress, Tom Nelson and Tim Friesen carded scores of plus-2 to tie for second place.
The women of Key Royale played a nine-hole, individual-low-net match Sept. 9.
Debi Wohlers rode a chipin on number nine to a 4-under-par 28 to match the score carded by Joyce Brown for a two-way tie for first place.
The men played a nine-hole team scramble Sept. 11 that saw the team of Saul Ladd, Dan Richardson, Jim Kirk and Tom Nelson combine on a 6-under-par 26 to grab bragging rights for the day.
Also reporting from the links, former longtime island resident George Tebbetts, now of Bradenton, slugged a hole-in-one with his 5 iron Sept. 11 at the Manatee County Golf Course in Bradenton. He aced the 140-yard 12th hole. Witnesses were Rick Weaver, Doug Williams and Tom Olson.
Horseshoe news
Hank Huyghe found himself in the winner’s circle Sept. 10 and Sept. 13 during horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City hall horseshoe pits.
The Sept. 10 games had Huyghe “walking” on a 3-0 record. He teamed up with Steve Doyle for the Sept. 13 action. They met Bob Heiger and Sam Samuels in the finals and came away with a 21-20, come-from-behind victory.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by team selection. Everyone is welcome.
