Super Bowl finale: Seahawks complete undefeated season
Slim’s Place Seahawks defeated The Feast Redskins 33-24 to win the NFL Flag Football Super Bowl Sept. 18 at the Anna Maria Island Community Center.
The win completed the first unbeaten, untied adult team since adult sports were added five years ago.
Despite the sound of a 33-24 score, the game was not close. The Seahawks’ offense moved the ball at will behind the passing of quarterback Don Purvis, who completed 24 of 28 passes for 257 yards and five touchdown passes.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Purvis to Dina DeJesus, and a 20-yard touchdown pass from Purvis to Andrew Turman.
The Redskins momentarily stopped the bleeding midway through the first half when quarterback Jason Sato handed the ball to Caleb Roberts, who then connected with Sato for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Slim’s Seahawks extended their lead on another efficient drive that ended with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Purvis to Turman with 47 seconds left in the half. That would appear to give the Seahawks a 27-6 lead to close the half.
But the Redskins went into hurry-mode with the clock ticking down in the first half. On second down, Ray Gardner jitterbugged his way for an 18-yard gain to midfield. From there, Sato dropped back and found Shay Coleman streaking down the left sideline. Coleman made a one-handed catch for a touchdown to pull to within 27-12 after the extra point attempt failed.
The Seahawks offense picked up right where it left off in the second half and marched efficiently down the field. Purvis hit Turman for 13 yards on first down and then he ran for 5 yards on second down. On third down, Purvis rolled to his right, avoided a sack and connected on a 22-yard pass play thanks to a spectacular diving catch by Turman that gave Slim’s first and goal from the 2-yard line.
Purvis took the snap and rolled to his right, patiently waiting for Jason Mickan to get open and connected, giving the Seahawks a 33-12 lead with 9:45 left to play.
The Redskins looked to be in line for a serious whipping after Mickan intercepted Sato and returned it to the 5-yard line, but Gardner jumped a route and intercepted Purvis at the 5 and took it back for a touchdown to make the score 33-18 with just under 6 minutes to play.
The Redskins made a defensive stop and got the ball back with 5:23 to play and on second down, and Sato hit Gardner streaking down the right sideline to pull to within 33-24.
The Seahawks got the ball back and salted away the final minutes of a 33-24 Super Bowl victory and completed an undefeated season.
Turman and Mickan both had big days, with Turman catching a game-high 11 passes for 111 yards, including two touchdowns and an extra point. Mickan finished with seven catches for 73 yards, including a pair of touchdowns and an extra point. Pat Calvary and DeJesus both finished with three catches, with DeJesus scoring one touchdown and Calvary adding an extra point to complete the scoring.
Gardner led the Redskins with 27 yards rushing, 68 yards receiving, including a 30-yard touchdown reception while also adding four flag pulls and an interception return for a touchdown. Caleb Roberts finished with six catches for 52 yards, while Coleman added two catches for 29 yards and a touchdown. Sato finished with 149 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The men got out for a few rounds of golf in the past week at Key Royale Club. The action got started Sept. 15 with a morning round, followed by an afternoon session.
The morning round saw the men play a nine-hole, individual-low-net match. Bill Shuman and Steve Gerrard finished in a tie for first place, carding 3-under-par 29s.
The men played a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match in the afternoon. Art McMillian and Gary Duncan both scored plus-3, putting them three points above their average to finish in a tie for first place.
The club women played a nine-hole red-white-and-blue low-net golf match. They teed up for three holes at the blue marker, three on white and three on the traditional red ladies’ tees. Debi Wohlers, Jana Samuels and Helen Pollock finished in a three-way tie for first place at even-par 32. Pollock chipped in on the fourth hole and birdied on the eighth in her round.
The men were back on the links Sept. 18 for a nine-hole team scramble. The team of Pat Moyna, Dennis Shavey, Dick Mills and Jim Kirk matched the 5-under-par 27 carded by Dan Richardson, Blake Ress and Mike Pritchett to finish in a tie for first place.
Horseshoe news
Horseshoe action on Sept. 17 at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits was rained out, but teams did play Sept. 20.
Two teams emerged from pool play with the requisite 3-0 records and met in the finals. The team of Sam Samuels and Bob Heiger rolled past Jay Disbrow by a 21-5 score to earn bragging rights for the day.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by team selection. Everyone is welcome.
