Bar owner arrested for operating gambling house

A 68-year-old Bradenton Beach woman was arrested by state regulators Oct. 17 for illegally operating a gaming room and possessing slot machines.

Brenda Cays, who owns and manages the Oasis bar, 6006 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton, is alleged to have operated the bar for illegal gambling purposes between Aug. 22 and Sept. 27, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Alcohol Beverages and Tobacco division of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Cays allegedly permitted patrons, including undercover agents, to play the casino-like slot machines and paid winners in cash.

The ABT served a search warrant and arrested Cays and a 28-year-old Ellenton woman tending bar that day on the charge of being an employee of a gambling house.

A bond of $1,620 was set for Cays and $1,500 for the bartender. Both posted the bond and were released.

Their arraignments are scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
