Holmes Beach voters will choose from three candidates to fill two seats on the commission, and from two candidates to fill the position of mayor.
Incumbent Commissioners Judy Titsworth and Marvin Grossman are vying for votes to win re-election Nov. 4. Both candidates have served a two-year term.
Grossman and Titsworth unseated incumbent Commissioners John Monetti and Sandy Haas-Martens in the 2012 municipal election.
Holmes Beach resident and Manatee County Area Transit island trolley driver Andy Sheridan is challenging Grossman and Titsworth.
Sheridan ran twice and lost in a bid for a commission seat in 2009 and 2011.
Campaign finance reports
As of the Oct. 10 reporting date, covering the period up to Oct. 3, Sheridan has accumulated the least in contributions — $594 — but the money flowing in is keeping pace with his expenditures at $372.15. Of his total contributions, $140 came from his pocket.
Titsworth’s financial report shows similarly slow activity with $850 in total contributions — $600 from herself — and $309.87 in expenses.
Grossman has attracted more donations than any other candidate in the commission race, with 24 individual contributions and that of Express Financial, a financial firm in Sarasota contributing to his $2,350 total. He has spent $512.03 and chipped in $300 of his own money.
Holmes Beach commissioners collect $6,000 as an annual stipend.
Commissioner David Zaccagnino is running for the mayor’s seat — vacating his commission seat following the election win or lose — against political newcomer Bob Johnson.
Zaccagnino has been a commissioner for nine years, having been elected for his first two-year term in 2005. He was re-elected in 2007, 2009, 2011 and again in 2013 for a term expiring 2015.
Bob Johnson has not held office, but chaired this year’s charter review committee.
As with almost all Holmes Beach candidates, funds are flowing in and out of Johnson’s campaign account. As of the Oct. 10 reporting date, covering the period up to Oct. 3, Johnson had $5,004 in campaign funds with $1,000 coming from his pocket.
Johnson has spent the most on campaign material — $2,967.25 — T-shirts, newspaper advertising, mailers, rack cards and yard signs. Johnson is the only political newcomer on the ballot.
He also seems to have generous and numerous donors, collecting donations — some up to $500 — from 39 individuals.
Johnson also has garnered the financial support of Commissioner Jean Peelen, who serves alongside Zaccagnino.
As the money is flowing in, it’s getting spent. Johnson had spent $3,175.80 of his contributions.
Zaccagnino has collected five donations, four from individuals and one from Harlan Management, a sports management company in Clearwater.
Only two contributors listed a Holmes Beach address.
His contributions so far total $1,180, with $430 coming out of his pocket. He has spent $682.32.
The mayor of Holmes Beach collects $12,000 as an annual stipend.
As of Sept. 26, the city of Holmes Beach had 3,027 voters according to the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Office. The city had 3,070 registered voters in 2013.
The polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 4 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 6608 Marina Drive, and St. Bernard Catholic Church, 248 S. Harbor Drive.
