Warrant arrest nets alleged mugger

A 21-year-old accused in the June beating of an Anna Maria man was arrested on a Dec. 1 bench warrant.

Cameron Bowen Ellsworth, 21, was arrested Dec. 3 at a Lakeview Place apartment in Anna Maria on a third-degree felony charge in connection with the attack of a man who’d been walking at about 12:45 a.m. June 8 in the 400 block of Spring Avenue.

Assistant State Attorney Jeff Siegal filed the charge Nov. 25, alleging Ellsworth struck the Anna Maria man, causing him great bodily harm, permanent disability or disfigurement.

According to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies found the man on Spring Avenue, where he told them that the attacker kicked and struck him repeatedly while he protected his face. The man declined EMS treatment.

Deputies were then called to the 200 block of Lakeview Drive, where they tracked blood and determined someone bleeding had climbed onto a boat dock, walked around a pool and jumped in.

Wet footprints led MCSO deputies to a staircase, and then went east on Lakeview Drive, according to the MCSO report. Investigators believe the suspect likely cut himself on a path behind the city public works area.

The next day Ellsworth gave a statement at the Anna Maria substation after waiving his Miranda rights, according to the MCSO report.

Ellsworth allegedly told the MCSO that while he didn’t recall battering the victim, he had been near the scene. He also told the MCSO he’d been drinking and taking steroids, and cut his finger on broken glass.

He posted a $1,500 bond and was released.

Ellsworth’s arraignment is set for 8:55 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
