A man driving a truck on Anna Maria Island with numerous empty beer cans behind his seat was arrested at the Anna Maria Island Bridge.
Peter J. Maggio, 50, of Bradenton, was arrested Feb. 20 by Holmes Beach police on charges of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.
He also was issued tickets for open container, expired tag and registration, altered tag and no proof of insurance, according to an HBPD report.
The officer first observed the vehicle at about 5 p.m. in the 3100 block of Gulf Drive. The driver turned east on Manatee Avenue from East Bay Drive and accelerated, and then stopped for the officer after crossing the bridge to the mainland.
Upon approaching the driver, the officer detected an order of alcohol, according to the police report.
The officer asked about open containers and Maggio allegedly reached behind his seat and showed him two cans of beer spilling out in the truck.
The officer counted about 18 mostly empty beer cans behind the driver’s seat.
In the center console, the officer also saw prescription ibuprofen and buprenorphine. The suspect allegedly told police he’d taken the buprenorphine earlier in the day.
Police arrested Maggio after administering field sobriety tests.
Maggio offered two breath samples, measuring .082 and .077. The legal limit is .08.
Maggio was booked at the Manatee County jail.
He was released Feb. 21 on a supervised release agreement in lieu of $870 bonds. The agreement requires Maggio to report to a county officer, consume no illegal drugs or alcohol and submit to random urinalysis.
Maggio was appointed a public defender.
His court arraignment is set for 8:25 a.m. Monday, March 23, at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
