Drugs and a bank drive-thru didn’t mix well for a Bradenton man.
John Spiwak, 45, of Bradenton, was arrested March 7 for driving under the influence and possessing marijuana after he allegedly smashed a GMC truck into the drive-thru at the Bank of America, 699 Manatee Ave., Holmes Beach.
Holmes Beach Police Department responded to the crash and Manatee County Sheriff’s Office assisted on the DUI investigation.
HBPD and MCSO officers report that after striking the bank equipment, Spiwak continued to drive 10-15 feet through the equipment.
Spiwak allegedly told police he “only tapped the equipment with his mirror” and also that he hit the document carrier on the center island while attempting to retrieve his bank card.
HBPD Officer Garrett Shaffer reported Spiwak was jumpy, nervous and scratching himself.
Spiwak told Shaffer he was taking muscle relaxants and Xanax. He reported taking pain medication and multiple health problems.
According to MCSO Deputy William Coleman’s report, Spiwak fell asleep while being observed, and removed cigarettes from a box that also contained a marijuana cigarette.
Spiwak’s breath samples indicated no blood alcohol content.
HBPD ticketed Spiwak for careless driving and illegal parking. He was transported to Manatee County jail. He posted a $1,000 bond and was released.
On March 18, the 12th Judicial Circuit Court State Attorney Office formally charged Spiwak with DUI, property damage and possessing marijuana. Spiwak pleaded not guilty.
Spiwak’s next court date is set for 8:25 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, in Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
