The Holmes Beach commission held a first reading March 24 of an ordinance that would replace the code enforcement board with a special magistrate.
The vote was 5-0 in favor of the switch.
A special magistrate would be appointed by the mayor and affirmed by the commission to decide whether a case constitutes a code violation.
Commissioners included a provision to hold a yearly review of the appointed magistrate.
The city currently has a volunteer citizen board advised by an attorney.
Bradenton Beach and Anna Maria use a special magistrate in lieu of a board.
It also was recommended the magistrate replace the board of adjustments.
A final reading and public hearing is expected to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at city hall, 5801 Marina Drive.
