Basketball playoffs start at center court, soccer kicks grass
The youth basketball league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center has concluded its regular season and now the battle for the playoffs begin.
The two-team 8-10 division championship game is set for 6 p.m. Friday, June 5 at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria. The 11-13 division playoffs get started June 3 when No. 2 seed Simpson takes on No. 3 Laade with the winner taking on top-seeded Gardner at 7 p.m. June 5.
The 14-17 division playoffs got started May 30 with a four-versus-five-seed matchup between Ray and Zele that saw Ray outscore Zele 71-58. Ray received a balanced scoring attack that saw four players scoring double-figures led by Michael Latimer’s 23 points. Tim Holly added 17 points, while Chris Johnson and Jack Walter finished with 10 points each in the victory.
Zele was led in the loss by Christian Hampton’s game-high 32 points and 14 points from Carter Bedingtaus.
The victory advances Ray to the semifinals where top-seeded Gardner awaits.
The second playoff game saw R. Gilman take on A. Gilman in a two-versus-three matchup for a spot in the finals. A. Gilman rolled to a 61-42 victory behind 18 points each from Jaret Rojas and Kevin Roman, while Alex Gilman chipped in 16 points in the victory.
R. Gilman was led in the loss by Jacob Kiester’s 13 points and 10 points each from Lucas Pacquin and Neil Carper.
Adult soccer plays on
The adult soccer league at the center completed its fourth week with four matches played May 28.
The standings are pretty tight so far with Eason Builders and Sato Real Estate tied for first with matching 3-1 records. They are closely followed by the 2-1-1 LaPensee Lions, while 11 Man Gang and Wash Family Construction follow in the standings with 2-2 records. Slim’s Place at 1-2-1 and Rebellion and Smiledeep, both 1-3, complete the standings.
Sato started the May 28 action with a 3-2 victory over Smiledeep behind one goal each from Teddy Louloudes, James Lynch and Ally Thomas. Smiledeep received a goal each from Monica Simpson and Danny Anderson in the loss.
Wash Family Construction rolled to a 5-2 victory over Slim’s Place behind two goals from David Hiram in the second game of the night. Kim Dohwun and Austin Wash added a goal and an assist, while Darrin Wash completed the scoring in the victory with one goal. Slim’s Place was led by PJ Smargisso and Sean Sanders with a goal each in the loss.
LaPensee Lions demolished Eason Builders 6-1 behind a hat trick from Yuri Pereira. Holly Belton added a pair of goals, while Kim Christenson added one goal in the victory. Omar Polar scored the lone goal for Eason Builders in the loss.
11 Man Gang received goals from five players in their 6-1 rout over Rebellion. Rico Beissert led the way with two goals, while Chris Yavalar, Lexi Braxton, Roman Eckert and Shawn Kaleta each scored in the victory. Jesse Brisson notched the lone Rebellion goal in the loss.
More soccer offered
The Anna Maria Island Community Center will again offer a cool way to keep the soccer skills sharp during the hot summer months.
For $90, kids can sign up to play in the center’s indoor soccer league, which gets started with tryouts June 15. The season runs up to August, with games played on weeknights in the gym.
Tryouts start at 6 p.m. for the 5-7 division, while the 8-10 division will step up at 7 p.m. and the 11-13 year olds have the 8 p.m. time slot.

Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club women played a nine-hole, individual-low-net match May 26 with a Memorial Day, red-white-and-blue theme. Players teed off from the three red, white and blue tees in the match.
Helen Pollock, Fran Barford and Debi Wohlers each carded 4-under-par 28s to finish in a tie for first place in Flight A. Sue Wheeler, Pam Lowry, Connie Livanos and Karen Mitchell were all one shot back in a four-way tie for second place.
Terry Westby and Markie Ksiazek both fired 3-under-par 29s to finish in a tie for first place in Flight B. Janet Razze and Marilyn Manzer tied for second with matching 31s.
Horseshoe news
There were two outright champs crowned during last week’s horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
The team of Dom Livedoti and Neil Hennessey forged a 3-0 pool-play record on May 27, while Tim Sofran and Hennessey did the same at the May 30 competition.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warm-ups begin at 8:45 a.m. and team selection is at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome to play.
