3 championship teams crowned in youth basketball
The youth basketball league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center came to a close June 5 with championship games in three age groups.
The two-team 8-10 division opened championship night with Calvary again taking on Island Real Estate. Calvary came out on top by a 12-8 margin behind 6 points from Sam Wright and 4 points from Tommy Colter. Isabella Padilla completed the Calvary scoring with 2 points. Other members of the 8-10 champs include Jaylen Reaves, Fiona Turner-Leatham and Gregory Jordan.
Dante Tilelli led Island Real Estate with 4 points, while Anthony Ngyen and Jack Proctor scored 2 points each in the loss. Other members of IRE are Nick Yatros, Michael Coleman and Evan Talucci.
The 11-13 division title was captured by Team Gardner over Team Laade 28-13 behind the all-around play of Andrew Proctor. He was simply too big, too strong and too fast for the Laade defenders.
Proctor outscored Team Laade’s 13 points on his own, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He was supported by Julius Petereit who hit two 3-pointers to finish with 8 points and Matthew Georgoulis who scored 2 points in the victory. Other members of the team are Ben Brashear, Madelyn Rogers, Sean Wright and Ben Barreda.
Joey Mannino paced Team Laade in the loss with 11 points, while Alex Rodriguez scored 2 points. Other members of the 11-13 runners-up are Shawn Balvin, Emma Laade, Cailyn Connor, Daniel Sentman, Connor Ludwig, Thomas Heckler and Alessandro Mannino.
The 14-17 division championship game brought Championship Friday to a close, as Team A. Gilman defeated Team Gardner 38-28 behind 14 points from Trey Moore and 9 points from Kevin Roman. Alex Gilman added 7 points for Team Gilman, which also received 6 points from Jaret Rojas and 2 points from Cooper Hardy in the victory. Other championship team members are Kobi Hunter and Tyler Choate.
Burke Hill and Trent Boring led Team Gardner in the loss with 12 points each, while Alex Rodriguez and Lane Burnett scored 2 points each. Other members of the team are Jake Parsons, Josh Parrish and Austin Morrow.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men teamed up June 1 for a morning partner’s match and, later in the day, a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System or quota-points match.
The morning match saw the team of Bill Shuman and Dennis Schavey combine on a 10-under-par 54 to grab clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
The afternoon saw John Estok and Jack Lowry tie for first place in individual honors with matching plus-4 scores. The team of Gary Razze, Dan Richardson and Mike Ross combined on a plus-11 score to win the team competition.
The men were back on the course June 4 for a nine-hole, team scramble. The team of Lex Halakan, Jon Holcomb, Art McMillan and Tom Nelson combined to card a 7-under-par 25, which earned them a first-place finish. The team of Tim Friesen, Rich Papini, Razze and Ron Vandeman was one shot back in second place.
Horseshoe news
Three teams advanced from pool play with the requisite three victories during June 3 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria Island horseshoe pits. The team of Steve Doyle and Dom Livedoti drew the bye into the finals, while Neil Hennessey walked his way into the finals with a 22-17 victory over Hank Huyghe and Jay Disbrow.
Hennessey’s walk to the championship was cut short by Doyle and Livedoti, who came out on top with a 21-15 victory.
June 6 horseshoe action was halted midway through the action due to rain. When play resumed, the team of Steve Doyle and Sam Samuels earned the day’s bragging rights as the only team to forge a 3-0 pool-play record.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Summer indoor soccer registration
The Anna Maria Island Community Center is again offering a cool way to keep the soccer skills sharp during the hot summer months.
The league gets started with tryouts at 6 p.m. Monday, June 15, for the 5-7 division, followed by the 8-10 division at 7 p.m. and the 11-13 division tryouts at 8 p.m.
Tryouts for the 14-17 division take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17.
