Holmes Beach commissioners agreed during their Sept. 22 meeting to put off further discussion about changing speed limits in the city.
Commissioner Jean Peelen made a motion to return the speed limit on a stretch of Marina Drive and Gulf Drive to 35 mph, pending a public hearing and discussion.
The speed zone runs from city hall, 5801 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, to the intersection of Gulf Drive and Manatee Avenue.
“We did screw up,” Peelen said. “We didn’t get the public input on this.” She went on to say she wants to see a second study done.
“I want a do-over,” Peelen said.
The speed limit was lowered the week of Aug. 17 from 35 mph to 25 mph by the Holmes Beach Police Department, which did so without public notice.
Police Chief Bill Tokajer released a statement Sept. 25 saying the speed of vehicles on the road was just one of the factors considered when lowering the limit. Other factors include pedestrians, bicyclists, low-speed vehicles, such as golf carts and scooters, curves in the road and the trolley, which makes frequent stops.
Without a second, Peelen’s motion died, ending the speed-limit discussion.
“I tried,” Peelen said.
“As soon as we settle some of this other stuff, I’d like to talk about it,” Commissioner Marvin Grossman said, leaving the door open to continue discussion at a later date.
