Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was detected in background concentrations in two samples collected offshore of Manatee and Sarasota counties the week of Aug. 31.
Additional samples collected throughout Florida did not contain K. brevis.
Red tide is a phenomenon caused by algal blooms, which may deplete oxygen in the waters and can release toxins that threaten marinelife and humans.
