Bradenton Beach Commissioner Janie Robertson says a moratorium on new home construction is the most important issue in her race to retain her Ward 3 seat.
Robertson, who is running Nov. 3 against Ralph Cole, said Oct. 22 she favors the “full development” of a moratorium ordinance. She also believes the city should endorse the best practices followed by many rental agents on Anna Maria Island, and should enforce existing parking and noise ordinances.
Robertson also sees no need for more special regulation, referring to the “transient public lodging establishment” license in the proposed quality-of-life ordinance.
Cole said Oct 23 he would support a moratorium if it were worded to accomplish the goals of people living in the residential zones that include single-family homes and duplexes.
Cole said Oct. 13 he’s been pleased with the response to his campaign.
“I’m getting a lot of support,” Cole said. “It’s been overwhelming. I’m surprised. It’s people wanting to vote for me. They want my signs.”
Asked which of his proposed policies or messages have resonated with voters, Cole said, “Mainly just positive thinking, man. All the issues that are out there right now, by the time I get in there, they’ll be gone. There will be different ones. If not, then we’ll handle them as they come.”
Cole has received $3,300 in political contributions and spent $2,026.63 since Aug. 1, when reporting began. Robertson has raised $348 and spent $313.
Commissioners serve up to three consecutive two-year terms and earn a $4,800 annual stipend. Swearing in will be held Monday, Nov. 16, at city hall, 107 Gulf Drive N., Bradenton Beach.
