Youth soccer up and running — finally — at Center
After some doubt, the recreational youth soccer season is up and running at The Center of Anna Maria Island, newly renamed, at 407 Magnolia Ave.
The games of the week — three ties — all occurred Oct. 9. The action started as Beach Bums and Barke & Company battled to a 2-2 tie in the 6-7 age division. Fiona McCarthy got the Bums on the scoreboard early in the match, but Jayden Sparks tied it up for Barke late in the half.
Barke took a 2-1 lead early in the second half on a goal from Chris Uslecti, but Addison Johnston scored for Beach Bums late in the game to tie it 2-2.
The next game of the evening saw Miller Electric and West Coast Air Conditioning battle to a 4-4 tie in the 8-10 division. Anthony Nguyen led Miller Electric with three goals, while Phillipe Baumgartner added one goal. WCAC was led by Eric McDonal’s three goals and one goal from Jack Matti.
The final game of the night saw Progressive Energy and Wash Family Construction of the 11-13 division duke it out to a 6-6 tie. Anthony Monetti and Giancarlo Padilla scored three goals each to lead Progressive, while Sean Rodriguez scored three goals to lead Wash, which also received two goals from Dalton Guthrie and one goal from Angelina Sculco in the tie.
The soccer action Oct. 5 saw Miller Electric take out the Feast in the 8-10 division by a 5-1 score behind four goals from Anthony Nguyen and one goal from Kiera Johnston. Matthew Bell notched the lone goal for the Feast in the loss.
The second match of the evening was an 11-13 division match that saw Progressive Cabinetry edge Sugar Beach Digital 4-3 behind two goals from Anthony Monetti and a goal each from Jackie Schlossberg and Giancarlo Padilla. Sugar Beach was led by a Tyler Brewer hat trick.
Action continued Oct. 7 with a 6-7 division contest with Signarama rolling to a 5-1 win over Beach Bums. Ewen Cloutier and Charlie Rogers scored two goals each, while Anthony Dunfree added one goal in the victory. Addison Johnston notched the lone goal for Beach Bums in the loss.
The next match of the evening saw Tyler’s Ice Cream roll past Wash Family Construction on a 9-4 score. David Daigle and Francessco Mannino both tallied hat tricks to lead Tyler’s, which also received two goals from Javier Riveria and one goal from Maddie Rogers. Sean Rodriguez and Dalton Guthrie scored two goals each for Wash.
Adult sports start up, too
Adult basketball and soccer are underway with basketball just completing its first week of play, while soccer fininshed two weeks of action.
Oct. 6 saw LaPensee Plumbing take a 56-47 victory on the B-ball court over Gator Squad behind 20 points from Jordan Demers and 16 points from Brandon Osmond. Gator was led by Scott Elisio’s 23 points and 9 points from Cody Sullivan.
The second game of the evening saw West Coast Air Conditioning take a 56-50 victory over Miller Electric behind 25 points from Teagan Purtill and 11 points from Antoine Bryant. Derrick Garget paced Miller Electric with 20 points, while Jason Mickan added 14 points in the loss.
Back outdoors for adult soccer Oct. 8, four games started with Island Pest Control’s 7-1 victory over Island Time. James Lynch and Nick Sato scored two goals each, while Josh Sato, Lexi Braxton and Matt Jeronimo added a goal each in the victory. Mike Powers notched the lone goal for Island Time in the loss.
Sato Real Estate rolled past Progressive Cabinetry by a 9-0 score in the second match of the night, getting two goals each from Kris Yavalar, Drew Mitchell and Cory Wash. Matt Kretzman, BJ Grant and Sean Flynn completed the scoring, each with a goal for Sato.
The third match of the evening saw Ross Built outlast Beach to Bay Construction by a 7-4 score. Gregg Ross led the way with four goals, while Eric Pullen, Max Gazzo and Josh Petitt scored one goal each. Kevin Roman led Beach to Bay with three goals and Rico Beissert added one goal in the loss.
Slim’s Place edged Mason Martin by a 3-2 score to close out soccer action Oct. 8. Stephen Perry scored twice and PJ Smargisso added one goal to lead Slim’s Place. Damir Glavan notched two goals to lead Mason Martin in the loss.
Horseshoe action at AM city hall
Three teams emerged from pool play with matching 2-1 records and met in the playoffs during Oct. 7 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Sam Samuels and Neil Hennessey drew the bye into the finals and watched as Dom Livedoti and Tom Skoloda eliminated Hank Huyghe and Roger Nigg 21-19 despite an Anna Maria record eight consecutive ringers by Huyghe. This broke the previous record of six in a row held by six other players.
The finals saw Samuels and Hennessey roll past Livedoti and Skoloda by a 26-9 score.
Jay Disbrow teamed up with Livedoti to earn the only 3-0 pool play record and the day’s outright championship during Oct. 10 action.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men were on the course for a few rounds of golf in the past week. Oct. 5 saw them on the course for a morning, nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match, while the afternoon session was a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System or quota-points match.
Charlie Porter and Al Pollock tied for first in the morning session with matching 4-under-par 28s and Matt Behan two shots back in second place.
The afternoon session saw Bob Soos run away with the individual top score with a plus-3. His score helped teammates Gerry Dahl, Gary Duncan and Jon Holcomb to the team title with a combined minus-2 score.
The Key Royale Club women took the course Oct. 6 for a nine-hole, individual-low-net-in-flight match. Helen Pollock carded a 2-under-par 30 to take first place in Flight A by two strokes over Pam Alvord, Sue Wheeler, Debi Wohlers and Jana Samuels who finished in a four-way tie for second place at even-par 32.
Janet Razze fired a 5-under par 27 to take first place in Flight B. Sally Martin was alone in second place at 1-under-par 31, while Kathy Miller finished in third place at 2-over-par 34.
Razze also won the game of the day, which was “throw out the worst two holes, giving her a score of net 13.
The men were back on the course Oct. 8 for a team scramble. Pat Dea, Bob Leedham, Art McMillan and Larry Pippel teamed for a 4-under-par 28 to match the team score of Scott Mitchell, Tom Nelson, Gary Razze and Blake Ress and complete a two-way tie for first place.
