Tight games highlight center’s soccer league action
Youth soccer continues at The Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., where, in the past week, some exciting games in each age division entertained the bleacher crowd.
The 11-13 division had three such games, starting with a 6-6 tie Oct. 14 between Tyler’s Ice Cream and Sugar Beach Digital. Francessco Mannino and Hagan Powers scored two goals each to lead Tyler’s, which also received a goal each from siblings Javier and German Riveria in the tie. Sugar Beach Digital was led by Tyler Brewer’s six goals.
Tyler’s Ice Cream then recorded a 5-3 victory Oct. 16 over Progressive Cabinetry behind two goals from both Javier Riveria and Francessco Mannino. Hagan Powers added one goal in the victory. Anthony Monetti scored two goals and Elijah Baugh scored to lead Progressive Cabinetry in the loss.
The final 11-13 game of the evening saw Sugar Beach outscore Wash Family Construction 8-6 behind three goals from Brewer. Ava Zink chipped in with two goals, while Travis Bates, Daniel Sentman and Chris Snyder each scored one. Sean Rodriguez, Angelina Sculco and Conal Cassidy scored two goals each to lead Wash in the loss.
Miller Electric opened the 8-10 division action for the week by recording a 3-0 victory Oct. 12 over The Feast behind two goals from Anthony Nguyen and one goal from Kiera Johnston.
The Feast bounced back from its loss by battling to a 2-2 tie with West Coast Air Conditioning Oct. 14. The Feast received goals from Julian Lazzara and Gregory Jordan, while Brad and Eric McDonald notched goals to lead WCAC in the tie.
Bark & Co. Real Estate earned a pair of victories in the 6-7 division, opening the week of Oct. 12 with a 2-1 victory over Signarama behind a goal each from Maddy Culhane and Jayden Sparks. Charlie Rogers scored one goal to lead Signarama in the loss.
Bark followed that win with a 6-0 thrashing of Beach Bums Oct. 16. Culhane scored a hat trick to lead Bark, which also received two goals from Jayden Sparks and one goal from Chris Uslecti in the victory.
Horseshoe news
Hank Huyghe and Neil Hennessey earned the only 3-0 pool play record and were the day’s outright champs during Oct. 14 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
Huyghe and Hennessey got paired up again and made it their week after defeating Tim Sofran and Dom Livedoti 21-8 in the finals.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Adult soccer kicks up
Adult soccer completed its third week at the center with only one unbeaten team. Sato Real Estate is 3-0, followed by a quartet of 2-1 teams that include Slim’s Place, Ross Built, Mason Martin and Island Pest Control. Progressive Cabinetry follows at 1-2, as Beach to Bay Construction and Island Time search for a victory.
Sato opened Oct. 15 action with an 8-1 whitewashing of Slim’s Place behind a hat trick from Eric Howell and single goals from Matt Kretzman, Kris Yavalar, BJ Grant, Cory Wash and Sean Flynn. Sean Sanders notched the lone goal for Slim’s Place in the loss.
The second game of the night saw Mason Martin roll over Island Time in six goals from Damir Glavan. Danny Anderson added four assists, while Jeff Walker and Austin Wash completed the 8-2 score with a goal each. Kyle Parson and Mike Powers scored for Island Time.
Island Pest Control edged Ross Built 5-3 in the only competitive game of the evening. Adam Mott and Josh Sato led the way with two goals each, while Lexi Braxton contributed a goal and two assists in the victory. Eric Pullen, Mike Brusso and Frank Agnelli scored a goal each to lead Ross in the loss.
Progressive Cabinetry rolled over Beach to Bay Construction by an 11-2 score behind nine goals from a single player — yes nine — from Anthony Barberio. Scott Eason chipped in with two goals and Nate Talucci made eight saves in the victory. Rico Beissert and Chrissy Rice scored a goal each and Jordan Demers made nine saves to lead Beach to Bay in the loss.
Plumbers lead center basketball
LaPensee Plumbing has jumped out to a 2-0 record in the men’s basketball league at the center. West Coast Air Conditioning and Gator Man Pools follow at 1-1, while Miller Electric brings up the rear at 0-2.
Gator Man Pools opened the Oct. 13 action with a 57-53 victory over Miller Electric behind 16 points from Aaron Dudukes and 10 points each from Dale Smith and Joe Combs.
Derek Gargett scored 16 points to lead Miller Electric, which also received 14 points from Tyler Bekkerus and 10 points from Nick Hampton in the loss.
LaPensee rolled to a 72-51 victory over WCAC behind a balanced scoring attack led by Shawn Hubbard’s 22 points and four players with double-figure scoring. Jon Moss added 13 points, while Mike Scpondra and Sam Hooker finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Teagan Purtil’s 26 points and 9 points from Antoine Bryant paced WCAC in the loss.

The Key Royale Club men played a nine hole low-net-of-partners match the morning of Oct. 12. Dennis Schavey and Bill Shuman combined on a 4-under-par 60 to grab bragging rights for the day. The team of Chet Hutton and Jack Isherwood were alone in second with an even-par 64.
The men were back in the afternoon for a nine-hole modified-Stableford System or quota-points game. Larry Pippel carded a plus-6 to take first place by one point over Lex Halakan. The team of Tom Lewis, Gary Razze and Mike Ross won the team title with a combined score of plus-5.
The women were on the course Oct. 13 for a nine-hole individual-low-net-in-flight match. Jean Holmes rode a chipin birdie on the second hole to card a 4-under-par 28 and a first-place finish in Flight A. Heather Blane and Brenda Solleveld were a shot back to finish in a tie for second place, while Tootie Wagner and Jana Samuels tied for third at 1-under-par 31.
Janet Razze torched the course to the tune of an 11-under-par 21 to take first place in Flight B. Sally Martin took second with 3-under-par 29, while Terry Westby was alone in place at 1-under-par 31.
