One team remains unbeaten in center’s adult soccer league
It’s a short season, but Sato Real Estate is leading the adult soccer league at the The Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
The team has an record, while Ross Built and Island Pest Control are right on their heels with 3-1 records should Sato falter. Slim’s Place, Mason Martin and Progressive Cabinetry follow with matching 2-2 records, while Beach to Bay Construction and Island Time are still in search of a first victory.
Action Oct. 22 started with Island Pest Control earning a hard fought 2-1 victory over Slim’s Place. James Lynch and Lexi Braxton scored a goal each to lead Island Pest Control on offense, while brothers Ben and Nick Sato made nine saves each to preserve the “slim” margin of victory.
Matt Plummer scored the lone goal for Slim’s Place, which received 12 saves from goalie Stephen Perry in the loss.
Ross Built rolled past Mason Martin by a 5-1 score behind three goals from Greg Ross and a goal each from Amy Ortega and Monica Simpson. Eric Pullen chipped in with three assists and Richard Fosmore made nine saves in goal.
Austin Wash scored the lone goal for Mason Martin, while Frank Agnelli made 15 saves in defeat.
The next game of the night highlighted the division between the top and bottom of the standings. Unbeaten Sato rolled to a 9-3 victory over winless Beach to Bay Construction behind four goals and six saves from Eric Howell. Matt Kretzman added a pair of goals, while BJ Grant and Sean Flynn each had a goal and an assist. Kris Yavalar’s goal rounded out the scoring for Sato.
Rico Beissert, Kevin Roman and Chrissy Rice each scored one goal to lead Beach to Bay, which also received nine saves from Jordan Demers.
The final game of the evening also was a blowout. Progressive Cabinetry ruled with seven goals and two assists from newcomer Anthony Barberio, rolling to an 11-6 victory over Island Time. Scott Eason added three goals and an assist for Progressive, which also received a goal from Kim Dean and a pair of assists from Katie Serdy. Goalie Nate Talucci finished with 11 saves.
Mike Powers scored three goals and an assist and Kyle Parsons had a goal and an assist to lead Island Time, which also received a goal each from Chris Klotz and Chase Parker in the loss.
Plumbers top basketball league
LaPensee Plumbing is still unbeaten after three weeks of action in The Center basketball league, though Gator Man Pools is on their heels with a 2-1 record and an Oct. 27 matchup looming. West Coast Air Conditioning follows at 1-2, while Miller Electric is still winless.
LaPensee opened the Oct. 20 action with a 62-55 victory over Miller Electric behind 21 points from Jordan Demers, 16 points from Ryan Burke and 12 points from Sean Hubbard.
Brandon Kern was the only consistent offensive performer for Miller with 24 points, including four three-pointers. Tyler Bekkerus added eight points while Jason Mickan and Jake Parsons finished with seven points apiece.
The second game of the evening saw Gator Man Pools cool off West Coast Air Conditioning by a 64-52 score. Chris Shaffer led Gator Man with 20 points, while Aaron Dudukes added 16 points and Dale Smith finished with 12 points.
Teagin Purtil was a one-man show for West Coast, finishing with a game-high 29 points, while Mindaugus Pakstas finished with 10 points in defeat.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play with 3-0 records and battled for the day’s supremacy during Oct. 21 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria horseshoe pits.
The team of Hank Huyghe and Sam Samuels earned a come-from-behind, 22-19 victory over Tim Sofran and Tom Skoloda to earn bragging rights for the day.
Huyghe was back in the winner’s circle Oct. 24, teaming with Bob Palmer to forge the only unbeaten pool-play mark.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men played a nine-hole, two-best-balls-of-foursome match the morning of Oct. 19. The team of Fred Meyer, Steve Gerrard and Chet Hutton combined on a score of 11-under-par 53 to match the score carded by Tom Bode, Bruce Allan and Bill Galleger.
Later in the day, Art McMillan fired a plus-2 during a modified-Stableford System match to win the individual match. McMillan’s total helped his team of Wayne Patterson, Larry Pippel and Tim Friessen to a minus-1 and a first-place finish.
The club women played a nine-hole, low-net-in-flight match from the blue tees Oct. 20. Lori Waggoner fired a 4-under-par 28 to take first place in Flight A by four shots over Brenda Solleveld, who finished at even par.
Heather Blane’s 2-under-par round gave her a one-shot victory in Flight B over Marcia Helgeson.
Fran Barford carded a 1-over-par 33 to win Flight C by one shot over Judy Ward.
Janet Razze apparently liked the longer tee shots as she fired a 5-under-par 27 to run away with Flight D. Roxanne Koche was alone in second place at even-par 32.
The game of the day was high odd scores, which was won by Judy Squire at 43.
