      Laurie Shahinian of Anna Maria Island died Dec. 11 after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Connecticut and moved to Florida at a young age. She was long-time resident of Anna Maria Island.

She graduated from Eckerd College and Barry University’s School of Law. She and husband Richard were  proprietors of family-owned Carpet Corner in Bradenton and Slim’s Bar & Grill in Anna Maria. She loved cooking and baking and had a big heart for animals.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 6608 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach. Memorial donations may be made to the Roser Food Pantry, 512 Pine Ave., Anna Maria.

She is survived by husband Richard; daughters Talia Maggi, Sandy and Jackie; beloved dog Slim and cat Papa.

Bobby S. Swicegood, 87, of Anna Maria, died Dec. 9.

He was born June 11, 1928, in Salisbury, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and then moved to Richmond, Virginia, to work with Southern Railway. He later transferred to Atlanta. He spent 41 years with the railroad before retiring to Anna Maria in 1988.

After retiring, he and his wife of 46 years, Joyce, traveled all over the world. When not traveling, he looked forward to taking friends and family out fishing to his special spots. He was known as “Grandpa” when visiting the American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24 in Bradenton, where he has a veteran tile honoring him for his service.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 248 S. Harbor Drive, Holmes Beach, with inurnment to follow in the Memorial Garden. Military honors to be rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Detail. Memorial donations may be made to TideWell Hospice. Condolences may be made online at www.shannonfuneralhomes.com.

He is survived by wife Joyce of Anna Maria; daughters Bonnie and husband Keith Pitchford of Tellico Plains, Tennessee, Patti and husband Bill Vannice of Somerset, Colorado, and Leslie and husband Jerry Cash of Anna Maria; son Brian and wife Johnna of Atlanta; brother Jack and wife Peg of Salisbury, North Carolina; sister Betty Cruise of Salisbury; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and extended family and friends.
