Seedings hold true in adult soccer league playoffs
Adult soccer at The Cemter of Anna Maria Island entered playoffs Dec. 3 and the seedings produced in the regular-season standings proved to be accurate as the higher seeded teams won every game.
The action got started on the center field when No. 3 seed Progressive Cabinetry took on No. 6 Beach to Bay Construction in a back-and-forth affair that wasn’t decided until the final whistle blew — a 6-5 victory for Progressive Cabinetry.
The teams traded goals througout the game, but regular play turned to exciting in the final 10 minutes. With Progressive nursing a 5-4 lead, thanks to an own goal from Beach to Bay Construction, Blair Schlossberg launched a long pass up the middle to Anthony Barberio, who had gotten behind the Beach to Bay defense. Goalie Jordan Demers aggressively came off his line to break up the pass, but Barberio maneuvered around Demers and deposited the ball into the empty goal for a 6-4 cushion.
With time winding down, Bing Robinson got loose up the right side and crossed the ball inside to Kevin Roman, who finished to pull Beach to Bay to 6-5, within one goal of an overtime opportunity, but Progressive salted away the final two minutes to close out the victory.
Barberio led Progressive Cabinetry with 4 goals and one assist, while Scott Dean added 1 goal. Scott Eason and Schlossberg each finished with one assist, while Nate Talucci was strong in goal with 10 saves.
Roman scored 4 goals to lead Beach to Bay Construction, which also received a goal each from Rico Beissert and Shawn Kaleta, while Sean Edwards had two assists.
No. 2 seed Island Pest Control rolled to a 6-2 victory over seventh-seed Mason Martin behind a balanced scoring attack that saw five players score. Ben Sato, James Lynch, Josh Sato, Lexi Braxton and Nick Sato all notched goals, while Lynch, Jhon Zamora and Braxton added assists. Brothers Nick and Ben Sato finished with 10 and eight saves respectively in the victory.
Danny Anderson scored the lone goal for Mason Martin, which also received a strong effort from Frank Agnelli, who finished with 12 saves in the loss.
The third game of the evening saw top-seeded Sato Real Estate roll to a 6-1 victory over winless Island Time behind 2 goals and one assist from Chelsea Hoffner. Matt Kretzman, Kris Yavalar, BJ Grant and Cory Wash each notched a goal to lead Sato, which also received three assists from Drew Mitchell and 10 saves from Jason Sato in goal.
Mike Powers scored the lone goal for Island Time, which also received 15 saves from goalie Ryan Moss in the loss.
The final match of the evening saw No. 4 Slim’s Place slip past No. 5 Ross Built by a 5-4 score.
PJ Smargisso scored 3 goals and Matt Plummer added 2 goals to lead Slim’s, which received an assist from Sean Sanders and 10 saves from Stephen Perry in the victory.
Eric Pullen had 2 goals and two assists to lead Ross Built, which also received 2 goals and an assist from Mike Vitori. Ross Built goalie Richard Fosmore finished with 18 saves.
Next up in adult soccer are the semifinal matches, which get started at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, when Progressive Cabinetry takes on Island Pest Control. That match will be followed by Slim’s Place taking on top-seeded Sato Real Estate at 8 p.m. with the winners of the two matches meeting in the Island Cup at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17.
Horseshoe news
Three teams advanced to the knockout stage during Dec. 2 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Bob Lee and Herb Puryear drew the bye and watched as John Crawford and Bill Wright defeated Ed Bergles and Rod Bussey by a 21-18 score. Lee and Puryear then rolled to an easy 22-10 victory over Crawford and Wright to earn bragging rights for the day.
Five teams earned 2-1 records in pool play and advanced to a winner-take-all playoff during Dec. 5 horseshoe action. Round one saw Dom Livedoti and Jay Disbrow roll to an easy 21-8 victory over Puryear and Hank Huyghe, while Lee and Crawford thrashed the team of Jerry Disbrow and Bobeldyk by a 21-2 score.
Livedoti and Disbrow advanced to the final with a 21-14 victory over Sam Samuels and Jim Kliener, but Livedoti-Drisbow fell short in the championship game, dropping a 24-14 decision to Lee and Crawford.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
Another week of beautiful weather produced another busy week of golf at Key Royale Club.
The men were on the course Nov. 30 for a pair of nine-hole matches. In the morning, they played a better-ball-of-foursome match. The team of Tom Lewis, Jim Helgeson and a pair of proxies came in with a score of 10-under-par 22 to match the score of Jim Thorton, Bob Reid and George Barford, forcing them to share clubhouse bragging rights for the day. The team of Don LaTorre, Lance Lindeman and Dave Kruger was alone in second with an 8-under-par 24.
The women played a Christmas scramble Dec. 1 with 48 golfers particpating. The winning team of Joy Kaiser, Sue Little, Barbara Estok and Karen Mitchell combined on a 5-under-par 27.
As part of the Christmas scramble, a special incentive called “plant the poinsettia” was awarded to the team whose second shot landed farthest from the tee on the fifth hole. By the end of the round, 12 poinsettias graced the fairway and the winning team was Mary Lou Dreier, Marilyn Niewijk, Terry Westby and Tootie Wagner.
Dreier, Heather Pritchard and Niewijk all had chipins on their rounds.
The men were back on the course in the afternoon for a modified-Stableford System or quota-point match. Dale Hudson’s score of plus-5 was the top individual score. Hudson’s score also helped propel his team of Al Carr, Dieter Burckhardt and Ron Vandeman to the top score of plus-5.
The men played a team scramble Dec. 3 with Randy Clark, Helmar Friebe, John Holcome and Peter Lund matching the 4-under-par 28 carded by Tim Friesen, Larry Pippel and Dave Richardson to finish in a tie for first place.
