Island soccer set for Dec. 17 cup, horseshoes, golf results
The Island Cup matchup in The Center of Anna Maria Island adult soccer league is set for Progressive Cabinetry and Sato Real Estate, as both teams eased into the finals Dec. 12 with impressive semifinal victories.
Progressive Cabinetry rode 4 goals from Anthony Barberio and a goal each from Kim Dean and Scott Eason to defeat No. 2 seed Island Pest Control by a 6-3 score. Scott Dean contributed two assists and Nate Talucci added 10 saves in goal to preserve the victory.
Adam Mott led Island Pest Control with 3 goals, while Lexi Braxton added an assist in the loss.
The second semifinal match saw top-seeded Sato Real Estate roll to a 4-1 victory over Slim’s Place. Matt Kretzman led the way with a goal and an assist, while Drew Mitchell, Eric Howell and Chelsea Hoffner each scored goals. Kris Yavalar and Sean Flynn added asssists and Jason Sato made seven saves in goal to help preserve the victory.
Matt Plummer scored the lone goal for Slim’s Place on an assist from PJ Smargisso, while Taylor Manning came up with eight saves in the loss.
The Island Cup is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff Thursday, Dec. 17. The championship match will be preceded by an all-star game, which kicks off at 7 p.m.
Horseshoe news
Only one team managed a 3-0 pool-play record during Dec. 9 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City hall horseshoe pits. The team of Neil Hennessey and Rod Bussey were the outright champs for the day that saw 13 teams compete for the honor.
Dec. 12 action saw Hennessey and Bussey paired up again but this time they were joined by Karl Thomas and Bob Palmer in the finals. Hennessey and Bussey completed a clean sweep for the week by rolling past Thomas-Palmer in the finals by a 26-10 score.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale men opened their week with a pair of golf outings Dec. 7. They played a better-ball-of-partners match in the morning and the team of Jim Thorton and Harold McKamish paced the field with a 4-under-par 28. There was a three-way tie for second among partners Bill Shuman and Dennis Schavey, Pete Thomassen and Jim Macvicar and Charlie Porter and Lance Lindeman, who all carded 3-under-par 29.
The afternoon saw the men back on the course for a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System or quota-points match. Gary Razzi posted a plus-4 for the best individual score on the day.
The team competition saw Nelson Eagle, Mike Gille, Larry Pippel and Terry Schaefer tie for first with Dale Hudson, Merritt Fineout and Dan Richardson after both teams managed a plus zero.
The women took the course Dec. 8 for a nine-hole, individual-low-net golf match in four flights.
Joy Kaiser carded an even-par 32 to take first place in Flight A by one stroke over Karen Mitchell. Mary Lou Dreier was alone in third with a 2-over-par 34.
Helen Pollock, Liz Lang and Joyce Wagner all carded 1-under-par 31s to finish in a three-way tie for first in Flight B, while Carol Patterson took second at even-par 32.
Terry Westby’s 2-under-par 30 was low round for the day, good for first place in Flight C. Jana Samuels, Carol Duncan and Deb Richardson each finished in a tie for second at 1-over-par 33.
Markie Ksiazek fired a 1-under-par 31 to earn the top spot in Flight D by four strokes over Janet Razze and Marcia O’Brien, who tied for second place with matching 3-over-par 35s.
The game of the day, team low putts, was won by Judy Ward, Heather Pritchard, Meredith Slavin and Joy Kaiser with a the low total of 66 putts.
The men were back on the course Dec. 10 for a nine-hole team scramble. The team of Jerry Elson, Dick Mills, Bob O’Brien and Chuck Ferguson combined on a 7-under-par 25 to grab clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
