He quit before the job began.
Anna Maria city planner Alan Garrett submitted a resignation letter Feb. 11 to the city.
Garrett’s contract allows him to give a 90-day notice and he asked the city to move quickly to find a replacement.
Anna Maria Mayor Dan Murphy said he’s “putting the wheels in motion to make that happen.”
Garrett, who has worked for the city since 2007, was the subject of a tug of war between Anna Maria and Bradenton Beach in January when each city wanted to hire him to work full time — doubling his service.
The planner worked two days a week at each city, alternating his services on a Monday-Wednesday, Tuesday-Thursday schedule.
In December, Anna Maria offered Garrett a four-day, Monday-Thursday contract. In January, Bradenton Beach countered with a similar contract.
Garrett made his choice and signed the Anna Maria contract at the end of January. He was scheduled to begin his new Monday-Thursday schedule in Anna Maria March 1.
Murphy and Commission Chair Doug Copeland said they were grateful for Garrett’s work and wished him luck for the future.
“The city will surely miss him because of his knowledge of our ordinances and the history of which they came to us,” Copeland said. “He’s done a fine job”
Bradenton Beach Mayor Bill Shearon said he would discuss the Bradenton Beach planner position with Garrett. But Shearon also wants to get legal advice before moving forward.
Shearon indicated that Garrett may have had misgivings about the terms for the Anna Maria job.
Efforts to reach Garrett Feb. 12 by phone were unsuccessful.
