Stopped for speeding and arrested for driving impaired, a Sarasota man allegedly kicked and damaged a patrol vehicle door while being transported to Manatee County jail.
Evan Daniel Barnett, of Sarasota, was stopped by the Holmes Beach Police Department at 11:34 p.m. Feb. 2— on his 29th birthday — traveling 57 mph in a 25-mph zone in the 5200 block of Gulf Drive.
He was ticketed for speeding and arrested for driving impaired and criminal mischief.
Officer Alan Bores reported he observed signs of impairment, watery and bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.
Barnett told the officer he had “two beers” at the Peek-a-Boo Lounge in Bradenton and thought he was in Sarasota, according to Bores’ report.
After Barnett was placed in Bores’ vehicle, he allegedly became irate and combative, kicking a door and causing it to bend. Barnett also spit, cursed and banged his head against the divider, according to the report.
The report also stated Bores twice pulled over to calm Barnett down and, during the second stop, attempted to gain compliance by pepper-spraying him.
Barnett allegedly refused to take blood alcohol tests at the jail.
Barnett posted $2,000 cash bond and was released.
On Feb. 9, Barnett pleaded not guilty and demanded a jury trial.
His next court date is March 11 at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
