Bradenton Beach police officers are distributing fliers about avoiding seagrasses to boaters in the city’s anchorage area at the east end of Bridge Street.
Bradenton Beach Police Chief Sam Speciale said he’s working with the West Coast Inland Navigational District to educate boaters about seagrasses.
Florida’s Endangered Species Act lists seagrass as a threatened species.
Ultimately, anchorage boaters will have to move to an area without seagrass, Speciale said.
Speciale said he didn’t know where they’d move to, but he’s working with WCIND to get aerial photos of the anchorage and determine potential anchorage areas.
This is the first step in the process to obtain a submerged land lease with the state and eventually create a mooring field, Speciale said.
