Beach House Real Estate reels in Super Bowl win
Beach House Real Estate reeled in Moss Builders 21-13 April 6 behind the all-around play of Jonathan Moss.
Moss caught a touchdown pass and threw for a touchdown on offense, while intercepting one pass and notching a quarterback sack for a safety on defense. For all this, Moss was named the game’s MVP.
Beach House quickly jumped on top as quarterback Don Purvis hooked up with Moss for 21 yards and a first down on the first play and then connected with Moss for a 24-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the game. Purvis then connected with Shawn Kaleta for the extra point and a 7-0 lead.
Moss Builders answered with a scoring drive of its own. Quarterback Ryan Moss made a shovel pass to Nick Sato, who netted 7 yards on first down and then connected with Jeff Walker for 14 yards and a first on the next play. Jay Hoffmeister got behind the defense for a 12-yard catch from Ryan Moss on first down and followed with an 8-yard touchdown strike to Sato. Ryan Moss then connected with Sato for the extra point and a 7-7 tie.
The Moss Builders’ defense held Beach House Real Estate to a three-and-out to quickly get the ball back on offense. Ryan Moss dropped back to pass on first down, but his pass was tipped by a hard-charging Jonathan Moss, resulting in an incomplete pass.
On second down, Ryan Moss again dropped back, but was sacked for a safety by Jonathan Moss, putting Beach House in the lead, 9-7, a lead they would not relinquish.
Moss Builders got the ball to start the second half, but that drive was killed by an interception by Jonathan Moss, who returned it to the 15-yard line. Purvis gained 2 yards on a quarterback keeper on first down and nearly had his second-down pass intercepted by Walker.
Facing third and 13, Purvis handed the ball off to Jonathan Moss on a sweep right, but Moss pulled up and threw the ball back across the field to Purvis for a touchdown pass — and a 15-7 lead.
Moss Builders took over on offense, but a flag guarding penalty on Sato followed by a Ryan Moss incomplete pass put them in a difficult third-and-long situation. Undaunted, Ryan Moss dropped back and threw a rope down the middle to Hoffmeister for a 23-yard gain and a first down.
Ryan Moss went right back to Hoffmeister for an 18-yard gain before Moss ran it in for a 5-yard touchdown to pull to within 15-13.
The teams traded possessions until the 1:23 mark of the second half. Beach House QB Purvis connected with Mike Gillum for 7 yards, when a tackling penalty gave them a first down. An incomplete pass was followed with a 4-yard pass to Kaleta. On third down, Purvis went back to Kaleta with a short shovel pass that he turned into a 23-yard touchdown play and a 21-13 lead with only 13.2 seconds left to play.
Moss Builders got the ball back, but an incomplete pass, a 7-yard pass play to Walker and a failed hail Mary attempt left Moss Builders on the short end of the 21-13 final score.
In addition to Jonathan Moss’ heroics, Purvis passed for 95 yards and one touchdown pass, while Kaleta finished with 45 receiving yards including a touchdown and an extra point.
Ryan Moss paced the Moss Builders offense with 145 passing yards, including a touchdown pass and a touchdown run. Sato finished with a game-high 105 receiving yards, including a touchdown and an extra point. Hoffmeister with 75 receiving yards and Walker, who finished with 55 receiving yards, rounded out the Moss Builders offense in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
Vince Mercadante and Ron Vandeman battled high swirling winds April 4 during a nine-hole battle that ended tied at 3-under-par 29 for the Key Royale President’s Cup Championship.
Rather than break the tie with a multi-hole playoff, Mercadante and Vandeman submitted a scorecard tiebreaker so they could join their fellow members for lunch. Based on the tiebreaker hole, Mercadante claimed the win and will have his name engraved on the President’s Cup trophy.
Steve Pfiel won the longest drive contest with a drive of 268 yards and captured the closest-to-the-pin contest on the seventh hole.
The Key Royale Club men got out twice April 4 for some serious golf action. The morning saw them play a nine hole low-net-of-partners match. The team of Al Kaiser and Wade Ladue combined on a 7-under-par 57 to take first place and earn clubhouse bragging rights for the morning. Second place went to Peter Karycki and Chet Hutton, who each carded a 6-under-par 58.
The men returned later in the day to play a nine-hole modified-Stableford System match. Quentin Talbert fired a plus-6 to take individual honors for the day with Greg Shorten coming in second on quota points with a plus-4.
Shorten’s score helped teammates Wayne Patterson, John Findley and John Cassese to a plus-6 and first place in the team competition.
The men were back on the course on April 7 for a nine-hole team scramble. The team of Earl Ritchie, Pat Moyna, Fred Miller and John Estok combined on a 5-under-par 27 to take first place, one stroke ahead of Chuck Patrick, Jim Router, Bob Blazer and Larry Solberg.
Horseshoe news
Four teams emerged from pool play and were left to battle for the day’s bragging rights during April 6 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
The first semifinal match saw Bob Lee and Hank Huyghe roll into the final with a 22-6 victory over Art Kingstad and Bob Palmer, while Bob Demont and Bruce Munro advanced with a 21-17 win over Myles Macleod and Jim Kleiner. Lee and Huyghe stayed hot, earning a 21-15 victory over Demont-Munro in the finals.
April 9 action saw two teams advance to the knockout round. Demont and Macleod earned an easy trip to the winner’s circle with a 23-12 victory over Lee and George Mclaughlin.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Volleyball tourney at Coquina
The EVP Beach Volleyball Tour will produce the Bradenton Pro Am Beach Volleyball Tournament April 29-30 at Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach.
The national tour’s local partners include The Center of Anna Maria Island, the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Bradenton Area Sports Commission.
The EVP Beach Volleyball Tour, which includes competition for amateurs and pros, began producing events in 1994.
The tournament includes age divisions, amateur and pro, and also a corporate challenge for local businesses to compete.
The community center is encouraging teams of four players to compete in the corporate challenge, which will be played April 29. The cost peer team is $100 and includes meal tickets, T-shirts and competition in volleyball.
The next stop after Bradenton Beach for the tour will be Savannah, Georgia, in May.
