Horseshoes, golf dominate sports for the week
The Key Royale Club men got out on the links for two rounds of golf April 18. The morning saw competition in a nine-hole better-ball-of-partners match. The team of Andy Barber and Peter Proxy combined on a 9-under-par 23 to take first place. Four partner teams — Wade Ladue and Paul Proxy, Neil Hammer and Jim Thorton, Tony Niewyk and Jim Lathrop, as well as Jim Auch and Chet Hutton — carded 6-under-par 26s to finish in a tie for second place.
Later in the day, the men were back on the course for a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match. Mike Gillie, Dale Hudson and Jim Watt all recorded plus-4s to finish in a three-way tie for first place.
The team of Dean Christensen, John Estok and Rush Haines combined on a plus-9 to take first place in the team competition.
The women membership at the Key Royale Club played a nine-hole individual-low-net match in four flights April 19.
Lori Waggoner fired a 5-under-par 27 for the low round of the day and first place in Flight A, while Marie Sholtz, Helen Pollock and Marcia Helgesen tied for second with matching 3-under-par 29s.
Barbara Estok and Sue Wheeler both carded 3-under-par 29s to finish in a tie for first place in Flight B with Carol Duncan, Beatrice Friebe, Sue Christenson and Tootie Wagner, all one shot back in second place.
Jan Turner’s 4-under-par 28 gave her first place in Flight C, two shots ahead of second-place finishers Roxanne Koche and Nancy King.
Gloria LaTorre took first place in Flight D and matched Waggoner for low round of the day with a 5-under-par 27. Penny Auch and Cate Foy were tied for second place in Flight D at 4-under-par 28.
Sue Little, Meredith Slavin and Trish Kruger carded birdies during their April 19 rounds.
Fifty-three players came out April 21 to enjoy golf, lunch and camaraderie in the club’s 2016 Men’s Spring Stag Day.
Tim Friessen fired an even-par 32 to win individual low-gross honors with John Estok one stroke back in second place. Hank Tremblay blistered the course to a 7-under-par 25 to win the handicap or low-net event. Art Hibbs was three strokes back in second place.
The team of Bob Blaser, Dick Mills and Gary Silke took first place in the team competition with an 8-under-par 24. The team of John Estok, Friessen, Greg Shorten and Quentin Talbert took second place with a 5-under-par 27.
In horseshoe news, four teams emerged from pool play and were left to battle for the day’s bragging rights during April 20 action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
John Crawford and Bob Lee opened semifinal action with a 21-13 victory over Hank Huyghe and Jerry Disbrow, while the pairing of Gene Bobeldyk and Sam Samuels won its semifinal match over Dom Livedoti and Bob Rowley by a 23-8 score. It was all Crawford-Lee in the finals as they rolled to a 23-4 victory over Bobeldyk-Samuels to earn a trip to the winner’s circle.
Three teams advanced to the knockout stage during April 23 action. Jay Disbrow and Bobeldyk drew the bye into the finals and watched as Lee “walked” past Karl Thomas and Livedoti by a 21-15 score. Lee followed with a 21-1 thumping of Bobeldyk and Jay Disbrow to earn his second trip to the winner’s circle in a week.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
