Soccer finale: The Feast gorges on short-handed Blue Lagoon Landscaping
The Feast rode a deep and talented roster to a 6-2 victory June 18 championship game in the 8-10 division at the Center of Anna Maria Island’s spring soccer league.
Tropical Storm Colin flooded the field for the scheduled game June 6, and the date may have contributed to Blue Lagoon Landscaping’s shortcomings — they played without substitutes due to the start of summer vacation.
At any rate, this game was not as close as the final score may indicate. The Feast was up by three goals after only 11 minutes of action. The first goal came when Jackson Kruse made a strong tackle to stop a promising run by Blue Lagoon’s Aiden Templeton. Kruse then kicked the ball forward to teammate Anthony Nguyen, who got behind the Blue Lagoon defense for a one-on-one with the goalie — which he won — giving The Feast a 1-0 lead.
The Feast kept up the pressure, but goalie Sam Leister made a couple of saves to keep Blue Lagoon’s deficit at one goal. However, they eventually fell prey to constant pressure.
After a corner kick by The Feast, Templeton and Connor Allen worked the ball out past midfield on what looked like a promising counter attack, but Kruse again came through with a strong tackle. He then took it all the way up the left side and scored for a 2-0 lead.
Gregory Jordan added to The Feast lead a couple of minutes later when he stole the ball at midfield and took it all the way in before finishing with his right foot for a 3-0 lead.
The Feast piled on in the 17th minute when Nguyen stole the ball and passed ahead to Jordan, who carried it up the middle to score another goal for a 4-0 Feast lead.
Less than a minute later, Jordan made another steal and carried it straight to the goal as the half came to a close for an insurmountable 5-0 lead.
Four minutes into the second half, The Feast again padded its lead when Kruse pounced on a throw in by Blue Lagoon and took it all the way for a 6-0 lead.
Templeton gave Blue Lagoon it’s best scoring opportunity a few minutes later when he picked off The Feast’s goal kick and got off a shot, but Konnor Oelfke came up with the save to preserve the shutout.
Blue Lagoon Landscaping finally broke through in the 35th minute when a good clearance by Tommy Baugher put Templeton in a 50/50 race to the ball with Feast goalie Kruse, who was out of the goal. Templeton beat him to the ball and deposited it into the empty goal to cut the lead to 6-1 with less than five minutes to play.
Blue Lagoon kept battling. Allen stole the ball in the midfield and passed it inside to Templeton, who scored just before time expired to close the game with The Feast on top at 6-2.
Jordan finished with three goals to lead The Feast, which also received two goals from Kruse and one from Nguyen in the victory. Other members of the 8-10 champs are Juliet Greene, Elek Brisson, Dante Tilelli, Kendall Rice and Giliany Aldius.
Templeton’s two goals paced Blue Lagoon Landscaping in the loss. Other members of the second-place team are Evie Baugher, Nick Yatros, Marlin Duytschaver, Patrick Collin, Ethan Sackett and Lily Kawahata.
Adult soccer action
The seventh week of adult soccer action produced little movement in the standings as the season inches closer to conclusion.
Jiffy Lube remains on top of the standings with a 6-1 record, closely followed by Slim’s Place, a game back at 5-2. Wash Family Construction and Eason Builders Group follow with matching 4-2 records, while Ross Built holds down fifth place at 3-3. Island Pest Control and Moss Builders occupy sixth and seventh place with matching 2-4 records, while Blake Medical No. 2 at 1-4-1 and Blake Medical No. 1 at 0-5-1 complete the standings.
June 16 action at the center opened with Jiffy Lube earning a 3-2 victory over Ross Built behind a goal wXG from Danny Anderson, Matt Plummer and Yorvi Moreira. Colleen McCarthy added an assist in the victory, while goalie Shawn McCarthy finished with 9 saves.
Chris Circharo and Mike Vitori scored ONE goal each to lead Ross Built, which also received an assist from Max Gazzo and 10 saves from Richard Fosmore in the loss.
Eason Builders Group outscored Island Pest Control 7-6 in the second game of the evening behind four goals from Anthony Barberio. Scott Eason, Joey Ciasulo and Austin Wash each scored once, while Scott Dean finished with two assists in the victory.
Lexi Braxton had had goals and an assist to lead Island Pest Control, which also received two goals each from Kevin Roman and Frank Agnelli, while John Coleman finished with three assists in the loss.
The third match of the night saw Wash Family Construction ease past Moss Builders by a 3-1 score. Andre Lewis, Rico Beissert and James Clifford scored one goal each for WFC, which also received six saves from goalie Jason Sato in the victory.
Ray Gardner scored the lone goal for Moss Builders, which received six saves from Don Purvis in goal.
Slim’s Place rolled to a 5-2 victory over Blake Medical Center No. 1 behind two goals from Matt Kretzman and a goal each from PJ Smargisso, James Lynch and Zach Schield. Sean Sanders added two assists and Will Case made three saves to wrap up the victory.
Ryan Besecu’s two goals and six saves from goalie Chris Dzubian paced Blake Medical Center in the loss.
Adult basketball rolls into week 6
The adult basketball league at the center passed week six and Team Jackson still has no losses. That’s because they had a bye and they lead the pack with a 5-0 record, just in front of second place Team Calvary, which improved to 4-1. Team Sapanora is alone in third place at 3-2, while Team Terman, Team Bekkerus and Team Aaron follow with 2-3 records. Team Bailey is alone at the bottom of the standings at 0-6.
Team Bailey opened the June 14 action by absorbing a 66-41 thumping from Team Sapanora. Scott Elisio paced Team Sapanora with 26 points, while Mike Sapanora added 19 points for the winners.
Jeff Marland scored 14 points and Daniel Bailey added 11 points to pace Team Bailey in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Team Aaron edge Team Bekkerus 56-53 behind 20 points from Paul Aaron and 13 points from Dale Smith.
Derek Gargett led all scorers with 26 points and Tyler Bekkerus added 9 points to lead Team Bekkerus in the loss.
Pedro Vega poured in 35 points and Reggie Clemmons added 20 points to lead Team Calvary to an 81-65 victory over Team Terman, closing out the June 14 action.
Ray Gardner’s 19 points and 16 points from Andrew Terman paced Team Terman in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men played their normal Monday games June 13, starting with a best-ball-of-foursome match in the morning. The team of Bill Shuman, Dennis Schavey and Hugh Holmes combined on a 10-under-par 22 to grab first place. The team of George Barford, Jim Thorton and Barry Martin were two shots back in second place.
Later in the day, the men played a nine-hole modified-Stableford System match. Tom Nelson lapped the field with a plus-5 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
The Key Royale women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match June 14 in two flights, in addition to a surprise poker hand. Sue Wheeler captured first place in the top flight with a 3-under-par 29, one stroke ahead of Sally Martin and Fran Barford, who finished in a tie for second place.
Terry Westby and Marike Ksiazek both carded 3-under-par 29s to tie for first place in Flight C, while Eileen Witzgall and Penny Auch tied for second with matching 2-under-par 30s.
Phyllis Roe captured the best poker hand on six sixes.
The men played a nine-hole scramble for their June 16 golf outing. The team of Jon Holcomb, Jim MacVicar, Dennis Schavey and Ron Vandeman combined on a 5-under-par 27 to take first place honors.

Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
