A cancer survivor died as a result of injuries sustained in a July 10 crash on Cortez Road West.
Daniel Lord, 67, of Cortez, was bicycling across Cortez Road West east of 102nd Street West when a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck him in an eastbound lane, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Lord was a popular server at local restaurants and also shared his skills in the kitchen at a number of establishments. He had been working at the Mar Vista Pub on Longboat Key when he was diagnosed with cancer some 20 years ago. He worked at a number of restaurants on Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, most recently at O’Shucks Raw Bar and Grill in Cortez.
He resided near the village of Cortez.
He was a featured speaker at the 2014 Anna Maria Island Relay for Life in Bradenton Beach and participated in cancer research.
The motorist, Eric Brenner, 30, of Bradenton, was arrested for driving under the influence in connection with the fatality.
Brenner refused to perform field sobriety tests or provide breath and urine samples. He was booked at the Manatee County jail and released on $500 bond.
Sarasota attorney, Jeffrey Young, filed a not-guilty plea in 12th Circuit Court on Brenner’s behalf.
An arraignment is set at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
