Road closures frustrated motorists July 5 when Gulf Drive in Bradenton Beach shut down for a crash, while Manatee Avenue in Holmes Beach at the Anna Maria Island Bridge closed for a vehicle that jumped the curb and became stuck on the bridge.
At about 9:25 p.m., Sally Jane Robertson, 49, of Findlay, Ohio, walked with her husband across Gulf Drive North near Ninth Street North at a crosswalk where she was struck by a vehicle driven by Richard D. Freday, 55, of Canton, Ohio, according to the police report.
Bradenton Beach Detective Sgt. Lenard Diaz said Freday likely will be ticketed for failure to yield to a crosswalk.
Robertson was first reported in critical condition, but after arriving at Blake Medical Center, she stabilized. She was in stable condition July 8.
And, while first responders were handling that emergency, at 10:14 p.m., a 69-year-old Bradenton man crashed his 2003 Jeep into the 6-inch curb on the Anna Maria Island Bridge and became stuck between the sidewalk and the bascule, according to police reports.
Traffic routing became a challenge.
“The two crashes were definitely an inconvenience to a lot of drivers. They expressed their displeasure,” Diaz said.
Diaz said Robertson will be ticketed with failing to cross in a crosswalk.
No injuries occurred in the bridge crash and the Jeep was towed at 11:30 p.m., Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Greg Bueno wrote in an email.
