Fall basketball, soccer seasons on youth sports horizon
Classes for most public school students resume Aug. 10, which elicits groans from kids and cheers from parents, and it also signal to sports enthusiasts that they are one day closer to the start of the youth basketball season at the Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
A six-game season will tip off Aug. 11 with two games starting at 6 p.m. and continuing weekly until Sept. 13. The playoffs are set for Sept. 20, concluding Sept. 21 with championship and consolation games.
The league boasts four teams of kids, ages 5-9, and sponsors Sugar Beach Digital, Salty Printing, Harry’s Grill and the Waterfront.
Soccer club kicks off fall season
Registration is open for the 2016 Manatee Area Youth Soccer League fall co-ed season. Teams are organinzing for players age 6 and under up to high school age.
Cost is $120, which includes a jersey, shorts and socks to go along with a 10-game season.
The last day to register is Aug. 20 at Dick’s Sporting Goods, 4108 14th St. W., Bradenton. This also is MAYSO shopping day at Dick’s.

Key Royale golf news
Tom McDonnell and Ron Vandeman both carded plus-4 to grab first place in the men’s quota-points golf match at the Key Royale Club July 26.
A few Key Royale Club women braved the oppressive heat to play a nine-hole individual-low-net golf match July 27 with a side game of low individual putts.
Penny Williams fired a 1-under-par 31 to grab first place in Flight A, one stroke ahead of Phyllis Roe.
Janet Razze earned the top spot in Flight B with a score of 3-under-par 29. Marilyn Niewijk was alone in second with 3-over-par 35.
Penny Williams, Phyllis Roe and Jana Samuels each had 17 putts to finish in a three-way tie for first place in the game of the day.
The men were back on the course July 28 for a nine-hole scramble. The team of Jon Holcomb, Jim Kirk and Gary Razze earned clubhouse bragging rights after combining on a 7-under-par 25.
Horseshoe news
Sam Samuels and Jay Disbrow earned the only 3-0 pool-play record July 27 and were the day’s outright champs in the horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
Two teams advanced to the knockout stage during July 30 action. Steve Doyle trailed Tim Sofran and Roger Nigg 17-7 before rallying for a 23-18 victory to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
