Basketball tips off in center gym, outdoor sports bear heat
Plenty of outdoor sports participants are feeling the summer heat.
And some activities in the past week were delayed by rain.
But for some young players, a gym provides a cool place to play.
The youth basketball league at the Center of Anna Maria Island tipped off in the gym Aug. 11 with a pair of games in the 5-9 age division. Games are scheduled on Tuesday evenings through Sept. 13, when the season ends. Playoffs are set for the following Tuesday and the championship game will tip off at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.
The first game saw Harry’s Grill roll to a 22-7 victory over Salty Printing behind a game-high 12 points from Anthony Nguyen. Kenneth Neiring added 6 points, while Grayson Mitchell completed the victory for Harry’s with 4 points.
Ewan Cloutier paced Salty Printing with 3 points, while Kieran Cloutier and Harrison Schenerlein added 2 points each in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Sugar Beach Digital roll to a 15-6 victory over the Waterfront Restaurant behind 13 points from Jack Procter and 2 points from Evie Baugher.
Jayden Sparks, Nick Yatros and Evan Talucci paced the Waterfront with 2 points each in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
Rain washed out most of the golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach this past week, though the men did manage to get in a nine-hole scramble Aug. 11. The team of Art McMillan, Tom Nelson and Mike Pritchard combined on a 3-under-par 29 to earn bragging rights for the week.
The rain forced the women to retreat to clubmember, fellow golfer Liz Lang’s house Aug. 9 for some Wii golf and lunch catered by the new Key Royale Club chef, Bill Shafer.
Lunch was a hit with the women, but there was no word on who the big Wii winners were.
Horseshoe news
Horseshoe action Aug. 10 saw only one team post a 3-0 record in pool play at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Steve Doyle and Neil Hennessey emerged as the day’s outright champs.
Two teams came out of pool play during Aug. 13 action in Anna Maria and battled for the championship. The team of Tim Sofran and Hank Huyghe obliterated walker Hennessey by a 24-0 score to earn the day’s bragging rights and end the winning streak — three consecutive championships — by Hennessey.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Register now for center soccer
The center is accepting registrations for its fall youth soccer league with divisions for players ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17.
Players must register by Sept. 9 either online at centerami.org or at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
The cost is $90 for non-members, while members pay a $5 processing fee.
The season will kick off in early October and end in December.

MAYSO puts out final call for fall soccer
Registration is ongoing for the 2016 MAYSO fall soccer season.
The cost is $120 for a jersey, shorts and socks to go along with a 10-game season.
The final day to register is Aug. 20 in-person at Dick’s Sporting Goods, 4108 14th St. W., Bradenton.
