Mason Martin chasing unbeaten record in flag football
Mason Martin remained unbeaten as Blake Medical Center is still looking for a victory after week three of the adult flag football season at the Center of Anna Maria Island.
Mason Martin is on top of the table with a 3-0 record followed by Beach House Real Estate, Moss Builders and Progressive Cabinetry, all sporting 2-1 records. Coldwell Banker, Tyler’s Ice Cream and Anna Maria CrossFit have 1-2 records, while Blake brings up the rear at 0-3.
Action Sept. 8 got started on the center field with Beach House edging Tyler’s 22-19 behind the quarterback tandem of Don Purvis and Jon Moss. Purvis completed 11 of 12 passes for 115 yards, two touchdown passes and 4 extra-points. Purvis also added 90 rushing yards, 65 receiving yards and a touchdown. Moss passed for 110 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 35 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards to go along with a touchdown and an extra point.
Other contributors include Jesse Griffin, who finished with 60 receiving yards, including a touchdown and an extra point. Jason Mickan finished with 60 receiving yards and a pair of extra points.
Jason Sato paced the Tyler’s offense, passing for 205 yards, a pair of touchdown passes and an extra point. Brother Josh Sato also had a big game, finishing with 120 receiving yards and 20 rushing yards, while adding two touchdowns and an extra point. Brother Ben Sato completed the scoring with a touchdown reception to go along with 40 receiving yards in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Progressive Cabinetry slip past Blake by a 19-12 score behind the all-around play of Tim Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy passed for 110 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 30 rushing yards, 60 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. Pat Calvary added 10 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards to go along with a touchdown. Caleb Roberts completed two of three passes, including a touchdown pass to go along with 30 receiving yards and an extra point in the victory.
Tim Shaughnessy also showed up on the defensive side of the ball with a interception, while Chris Culhand finished with an interception and a sack.
Aaron VanHook passed for 135 yards and ran for 55 more to lead the Blake offense, which also received a 45-yard touchdown pass from Chris McCorkle to Van Kinder. McCorkle also added 65 receiving yards to spark the offense. Mark Baker accounted for the other touchdown when he intercepted Shaughnessy and took it to the house.
Mason Martin rolled to a 27-6 victory over Anna Maria CrossFit in the third game of the evening behind another all-around effort from Ray Gardner. Gardner passed for 100 yards, including two touchdown passes while rushing for 55 yards and adding 95 receiving yards. As if that weren’t enough, Gardner added an interception return for a touchdown on defense. Eric Gledhill finished with 50 receiving yards including two touchdowns an 3 extra points, while Tyler Lancaster had 80 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Quarterback Danny Murphy threw for 130 yards and a touchdown, but was hurt by a pair of interceptions. Alan Conley added 30 rushing yards, 60 receiving yards and the lone touchdown in the loss.
Ryan Moss passed for 215 yards and three touchdowns to lead Moss Builders to a 34-21 victory over Coldwell Banker, closing out flag football action for the night. Mike Gillum was his favorite target, finishing with 150 receiving yards, including two touchdown receptions and a pair of extra points. Gillum also ran for 40 yards and a touchdown, while also adding an interception return for a touchdown on defense. Chad Woods completed the scoring with 65 receiving yards, including a touchdown and 2 extra points.
Charles Buky threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns to lead Coldwell Banker in the loss. Matthew Morgan was his top target with 105 receiving yards, including a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion, while Robert Kaston finished with 55 receiving yards, a touchdown and an extra point.
Basketball action continues in the gym
Sugar Beach Digital continued its run towards perfection with another comfortable victory to improve to 5-0 in the youth basketball league at the center.
Sugar defeated Salty Printing 12-1 to open Aug. 30 action at the center. Jack Proctor paced Sugar Beach with 8 points, while Peyton Hovda and Evie Baugher added 2 points each in the victory.
Kieran Cloutier led Salty Printing with 1 point in the loss.
Harry’s Grill is still on Sugar Beach Digital’s heels at 4-1, after a win over Waterfront Restaurant & Grill 10-5 behind 8 points from Anthony Nguyen and 2 points from Colin Bankert.
Nick Yatros scored 3 points to lead Waterfront, which also received 2 points from Evan Talucci in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men played a nine-hole scramble on Sept. 8. The team of Merritt Fineout, John Masefield and Tom Nelson combined on a 5-under-par 27 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
Horseshoe news
Only one team managed the requisite 3-0 pool-play record during Sept. 7 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Tim Sofran and Roger Nigg were the day’s outright champions for their efforts.
Two teams emerged from pool play during Sept. 10 action and battled for a trip to the winner’s circle. The team of Hank Huyghe and Neal Hennessey earned bragging rights for the day after defeating Sam Samuels and Nigg 22-13 in the championship game.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Ugly Grouper cornhole league tosses off
The current standings in the Ugly Grouper Cornhole League after week No. 1 are:
Captain Morgan Charters, Island Coffee Haus HB, Amateur Corn Stars, Island Bazaar Beach Bums, Bag em and Tag em and Def Con 5 all stand at 1-0.
General Store, Corn Dawgs, Beach Monkey Pools, The Feast, The Duck and The Corn, Island Coffee Haus and Island Coffee Haus AMI stand at 0-1, while the Feast #2 and AMI Car Wash are at 0-0.
