The Bradenton man charged with the 2015 burglary of a beachfront home he claimed to own with singer-songwriter Mariah Carey was ordered into custody by the 12th Circuit Court.
Jason Lowell James, 37, was up for a competency review Sept. 13, when Judge Deno Economou revoked James’ previously posted bonds and set a new $15,000 bond on burglary and criminal mischief charges. James had been out of jail pending court-ordered treatment.
Assistant State Attorney Matthew Davenport said Economou revoked his bond after he found James had not complied with prior orders.
Based on a prior finding of incompetency, Economou ordered James unfit to proceed in court and released him Jan. 19 on the conditions he live with his parents and attend an addiction program.
James had been found watching television and drinking beer when Holmes Beach police responded to a March 15, 2015, report of a break-in at a residence in the 100 block of White Avenue.
Police say they also found a shattered window, scratched floors and damaged doors and shutters.
In contrast to James’ story about co-owning the property with Carey, Wesley Beck, speaking for the owner, ATEM Partnership, denied a relationship with James or Carey.
By a Sept. 15 order, Economou appointed a psychologist to again report on James’ competency.
In a Sept. 20 court filing, James’ Bradenton attorney, Scarlett Guy, asked the court to allow her to withdraw from the case. A hearing to consider the withdrawal motion is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.
An Oct. 27 competency hearing also was set but Davenport expects a continuance.
All hearings are at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
At press time, James was in the Manatee County jail.
