Progressive Cabinetry nails down adult flag football title
The adult flag football league playoffs concluded Oct. 27 at the Center of Anna Maria Island with semifinal and championship games. Progressive Cabinetry rolled to a pair of victories to claim the 2016 Super Bowl title.
Quarterback Tim Shaughnessy and receiver Pat Calvary were unstoppable. Shaughnessy completed 17 of 18 passes for 325 yards and five touchdowns, while also running for 65 yards and an extra point.
Pat Calvary had a 20-yard touchdown to go along with 170 receiving yards for two touchdowns and an extra point. Caleb Roberts also had a big game with 100 receiving yards, three touchdowns and an extra point in the victory. Christina Calvary completed the scoring with a touchdown and an extra point to go with 60 receiving yards.
Pat Calvary and Roberts led the defense with four flag pulls each, while Brianna Shaughnessy added a flag pull and a pair of quarterback sacks. Other members of Progressive Cabinetry are Mike Shaughnessy and Jason Garden.
Mason Martin Construction was led by Ray Gardner, who threw for 185 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown. Eric Gledhill paced Mason Martin with 95 receiving yards and a pair of touchdown receptions, while Jay Hoffmeister added 75 receiving yards, two touchdowns and an extra point in the loss.
Mason Martin advanced to the championship game by defeating Moss Builders 25-21 behind another huge game from Ray Gardner, who ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns and passed 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Eric Gledhill added 80 receiving yards, including a touchdown and an extra point.
Moss Builders was led by Ryan Moss, who threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite receiver, Chad Woods, finished with 130 receiving yards, a touchdown and an extra point. Andrew Terman finished with 40 receiving yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion, while Mike Gillum completed the scoring with a touchdown reception.
Progressive Cabinetry advanced to the title game by rolling past Tyler’s Ice Cream 28-18. Quarterback Shaughnessy led the attack with 245 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns plus 35 rushing yards and a touchdown. Dad Mike Shaughnessy completed 3-of-4 passes for 30 yards and added 10 receiving yards.
Caleb Roberts led all receivers with 130 yards, including a pair of touchdowns and 2 extra points, while also completing a touchdown pass. Pat Calvary completed the scoring for Progressive with a 5-yard touchdown run, a touchdown reception and 60 receiving yards.
Jason Sato threw for 140 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to lead Tyler’s Ice Cream, which also received two touchdown receptions and a 10-yard touchdown run from Josh Sato. Ben Sato completed the scoring with a touchdown reception and 20 receiving yards in the loss.
Adult basketball continues
Adult basketball at the center completed its second week of action with a pair of games played Oct. 25.
Beach to Bay Construction improved to 2-0 after slipping past Mike Walter & Associates 62-58 behind 19 points from Jesse Dauphinee and 16 points from Matt Rossi. Mark Bryan finished with 10 points to help Beach to Bay to the victory.
The loss dropped Mike Walter & Associates to 0-2. Thomas Gish led all scorers with 35 points, but he was the only player in double figures for Mike Walter in the loss.
The other game played Oct. 25 saw Harry’s Grill improve to 1-1 on the season with an 80-40 thumping of Blake Medical Center in the five-team league.
Taegon Purtill led four players in double figures with 32 points. Antwan Jackson added 16 points, Derek Gargett posted 15 points and Patrick Calvary 10 points in the victory.
Giovanni Reino led Blake with 14 points and Chris Hall added 7 points in the loss.
Youth soccer plays on
Youth soccer completed its second week of action with a bevy of games, including the Spooktacular Saturday — costumed players —Oct. 29. However, results were not available at presstime for the spooky games.
Progressive Cabinetry rolled to an 8-4 victory over Tyler’s Ice Cream during 11-14 division action on Oct. 24. David Daigle scored three goals and Christian DeWitt added two to lead Progressive, which also received single goals from Alanna Belfore, Nick DeWitt and Tuna McCracken in the victory.
Tyler Brewer scored four goals to lead Tyler’s Ice Cream — no family relation. Tyler’s also saw six saves from Tres Maddox in goal.
Mason Martin Builders earned a 2-1 victory over Bins Be Clean to open 8-10 division soccer action Oct. 25. Mason Agnelli led the way with two goals and Dalton Fox made four saves to preserve the victory.
Riley Lawson scored the lone goal for Bins Be Clean in the loss.
The second match of the evening saw Gulf-Bay Realty record a 5-3 victory over Cloud Pest Control. Gregory Jordan scored three goals and Jayden Sparks added two goals to lead Gulf-Bay.
Aiden Templeton paced Cloud Pest Control in the loss with three goals.
Bin There Dumped That edged Blalock Walters by a 2-1 score to open 6-7 division action Oct. 24. Ewan Cloutier scored both goals for the victory.
Victoria Perry notched the lone goal for Blalock Walters.
Conor Samblis scored two goals and Alex Cox added a goal to lead Signarama past Air & Energy by a 3-2 score.
Gigi Greene and Charlie Rogers each scored a goal in the loss column.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men got out for a couple of rounds of golf last week, starting with a nine-hole modified-Stableford System match Oct. 24.
Jack Isherwood led all golfers with a plus-4 to earn clubhouse bragging rights ahead of Art McMillan and Larry Pippel, who both carded plus-3s on their rounds.
The team of Bob Leedham, Bill Koche, Pippel and Earl Ritchie combined on a plus-1 to win the team title.
The women played Oct. 25 in a nine-hole matchup with a twist — they limited their resources to three clubs, including the putter.
Phyllis Roe grabbed first place in Flight A with a 3-under-par 29, one stroke ahead of Helen Pollock.
Barb Mason Estok held the top spot in Flight B with a 3-under-par 29 — two strokes better than Sue Wheeler.
Judy Squire, Terry Westby, Pollock and Debbie Richardson all had chipins on the day.
The men were back on the course Oct. 27 for a nine-hole team scramble. The team of Jon Holcomb, Jim Kirk and Dan Richardson combined on a 1-under-par 31 to earn first place.
Horseshoe news
There was no need for playoffs as Dom “Dominator” Livedoti’s winning streak finally came to an end during last week’s horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
Livedoti partnered with Karl Thomas Oct. 26 to forge the only 3-0 pool-play record and earn the day’s outright championship. The win was Livedoti’s ninth in a row, dating back to Sept. 28.
The streak officially ended Oct. 29 when Bob Palmer walked his way to the only 3-0 pool-play record.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
