AMI Paddlers race in state’s largest dragon boat fest

AMI Paddlers from Paradise competed Nov. 10 in the Lake Hernando Dragon Boat Festival, the largest dragon boat race in the state.

The festival featured 76 racing teams.

AMI Paddlers from Paradise — based on Anna Maria Island — had a mixed boat — men and women — that finished fourth in the consolation division and their senior women’s boat finished fourth overall — 0.02 seconds from the bronze medal.

The AMI Paddlers include Gail Trombley, Mileah Hudgins, Lynn Kravontka, Evelyn Silverthorn, Diane Goolsby, Gail McCall, Sandy Bouwer, Lori Stuckey, Marion May, Cerise Jensen, Susan Lee, Vanessa Burns, Lauri Fern, Bill Booher, Rick Jensen, Andre Essington, Marty Hurbi, John Stuckey and coach Melinda Bradway.

The festival concluded the 2018 racing season, which was the most successful to date for the team.

The team will now train for its next race, in February 2019.

AMI Paddlers from Paradise’s sponsors for the 2018 season included Beach Bums, Harry’s Bar and Grill, How Lucky AMI, TPM Unlimited and Pookie’s Dragons.
