Summer cheer for adult soccer startup — ‘it’s a kick in the grass’

Adult soccer players kicked off a summer season of matches June 18 at the Center of Anna Maria Island with nine coed teams committed to play.

They’ll play on the outdoor pitch, where, as the old Rowdies cheer for soccer goes, “It’s a kick in the grass.”

The action got off to a shaky start with Vintage Beach finding itself without reserves. But, no problem. The game is full of good sports and Neil Fellowes from Beach Bums and Bill Romberger from Gulfview Windows and Doors stepped up to provide some depth for Vintage Beach.

Vintage Beach utilized the reinforcements to perfection as Joey Hutchinson scored four goals and Fellowes added a goal and an assist to lead the team to a 5-4 victory over Beach Bums. Goalie Clancy Vaughn helped preserve the victory with 10 saves.

Kevin Roman scored a pair of goals to lead Beach Bums, which also received a goal each from Robert Fellowes and Amy Ivin. Connor Haughey chipped in with an assist and Jason Sato made six saves in the loss.

The second match of the night saw Sato Real Estate slip past Blalock Walters 5-3 behind two goals each from Murat Akay and Connor Bystrom. Josh Sato added a goal to the victory, while Hakan Toka contributed an assist and Steve Oelfke made eight saves.

Matt Staggs had two goals and an assist to lead Blalock Walters, which also received a goal from Austin Nutting, an assist from Matt Plummer and nine saves from Trey Austin in the loss.

The third match of the evening saw Moss Builders hang on for a 5-4 victory over Gulfview Windows and Doors behind two goals from Brent Moss and a goal and three assists from Aaron Parkin. Ed Moss and Ashley Friszman each added a goal, while Ryan Moss came through with 10 saves to help preserve the victory.

Raul Loera and Daniel Adan each came through with a goal and an assist to lead Gulfview, which also received goals from Nate Talucci and Jesse Kunc. Brandin Holcomb came through with six saves in the loss.

The last match of the evening saw Solid Rock Construction, lacking enough players to field a team, take a forfeit.

Adult soccer action at the Center of Anna Maria Island continues at 6 p.m. June 25 and then Thursdays until Aug. 13, when playoffs will begin.
