With only a week remaining on the adult flag football league schedule at the Center of Anna Maria Island, the top seed rests in the hands of Ugly Grouper at 6-0.
Beach Bums follows with a 5-1 record and then third-place Solid Rock Construction at 4-2. Moss Builders holds fourth with a 3-3 record, while Slim’s Place, Mi-Box and Sandbar Restaurant follow with 2-4 records. Salty Printing — still without a win — appears to have a playoff matchup etched in stone with whichever team nails down the top seed.
The playoffs will kick off March 11 with four quarterfinal matchups followed by semifinals March 18, then championship and all-star games March 25.
Action Feb. 25, which didn’t have a close game all night, started with Ugly Grouper cruising to a 33-14 victory over second-place Beach Bums. Brandon Kull had a big game, throwing for two touchdowns and receiving two touchdowns.
Jaret Rojas threw for a score while adding two touchdown receptions and a 2-point conversion. Octavious Cole completed the scoring for Ugly Grouper with a touchdown pass and an extra point.
Beach Bums received a touchdown pass from Matt Briley to Kemo Harris, who also added a 2-point conversion. Anthony Mannino completed the scoring in the loss with a pick-six.
The second game of the evening saw Mi-Box explode for 65 points in a dominating 65-20 victory over winless Salty Printing. Matthew Manger accounted for seven TDs — four passing, two running and one receiving. Not to be outdone, teammate Dominick Otteni had two passing, one rushing and one receiving TD, while also chipping in a 2-point conversion and three interceptions on defense, including one he returned for a touchdown.
Tim Shaughnessy paced Salty Printing with two rushing TDs and a pass for a TD to Zach Anabtawi.
Solid Rock Construction demolished Moss Builders 35-13 behind five touchdown passes from Jon Moss. Moss connected with four receivers, Zack Long, who finished with five catches, including two for touchdowns, while Brandin Holcomb, Jesse Skipper and Evelyn Long also scored on receptions.
Moss Builders was led by quarterback Ryan Moss, who connected with Cole Carter and Zach Routh for touchdowns.
The final game of the night saw Sandbar Restaurant roll to a 40-12 victory over Slim’s Place behind two TD passes and three scoring runs from Matteo Ferris. Tyler Brewer had two touchdown catches and a pair of extra points. Kari Stephens completed the scoring with a pick-six.
Wade Carter had a touchdown pass and a touchdown reception to lead Slim’s Place, which also received a touchdown pass from Tim Holly and a catch for a TD from JJ Frisman.
Adult soccer rolls up on playoffs
With only a week left until adult soccer league playoffs commence, there are three teams battling for the top seed. Burton Brick & Tile and Sato Real Estate are both 4-0-1, one point ahead of Allied, which boasts a 4-1-1 record. Servis First Bank holds down the fourth seed with a 3-3 record, just ahead of fifth seed Blalock Walters at 2-4. The Gitt Team at 1-4, Jiffy Lube at 1-4-1 and Slim’s Place at 0-4-2 round out the standings.
Action kicked off Feb. 24 with Burton defeating Jiffy Lube 5-2 behind a hat trick from Katie Christianson and a goal each from Jonathan Aragon and Zach Lieb.
Danny Anderson scored both goals to lead Jiffy Lube in the loss.
The Gitt Team got in the win column with a 5-2 triumph over Servis First Bank. Tanner Zellmar paced Gitt with two goals, while Robert Fellowes, Owen Huffman and Franco Ortiz Gitt also scored. Neil Fellowes helped preserve the victory with five saves between the pipes.
Greg Ross and Ugur Durmaz scored a goal each to lead Servis First Bank, which also received 13 combined saves from Ben Sato and Andrew Sullivan in the loss.
Sato Real Estate saw goals from four players in its 6-2 victory over Blalock Walters in the third match of the night. Hakan Toka and Race Arande scored two goals each to lead Sato, which also receive a goal each from Amy Ivin and David Noval.
Nick Bouchard scored two goals and Kevin Mulcahy made 11 saves to lead Blalock Walters in the loss.
The last scheduled match of the night saw Slim’s Place fumble, unable to field a team, giving Allied a forfeit victory.
Matchups set for youth football playoffs
Regular-season action in the youth flag football leagues has concluded and playoff matchups are set for the 8-10 and 11-13 divisions.
Moss Builders earned top seed in the 8-10 division with a 5-1 record, earning a bye into the second-round playoffs. Tidy MD finished right behind Moss with a 4-1-1 record, setting up a first-round matchup March 2 with No. 7 Shady Lady. No. 3 Cloud Pest Control then takes on No. 6 Ray’s Ramblings, while No. 4 Coastline Contractors battles No. 5 seed Beach Bums in the last quarterfinal matchup.
The winners on March 2 advance to the March 9 semifinals with the chance to advance to the championship cup game later in the evening.
Root Logix earned the No. 1 seed in the 11-13 division with a perfect 6-0 record and will sit back and watch the division’s March 2 semifinals. Quarterfinal action will kick off with No. 3 Poppo’s Taqueria taking on HSH Designs. No. 4 Gulf Drive Cafe then takes on No. 5 Ugly Grouper followed by No. 2 Detweiler’s Gas battling No. 7 The Gitt Team in the final game of the evening.
The semis and championship matches are set for March 9.
Horseshoe news
Two teams advanced from pool play and battled for the day’s supremacy during Feb. 24 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits.
Bob Mason and Tom Skoloda earned the day’s bragging rights after cruising to a 22-5 victory over Tom Farrington and Del Reese.
The Feb. 27 games saw the last two unbeaten teams lose their final pool-play matches, resulting in an eight-team playoff.
Quarterfinal action got started with Bob Palmer and Bob Lee earning a 21-0 shutout victory over Adin Shank and Jay Disbrow while Bob Heiger and Rod Bussey eliminated Neil Hennessey by a 21-9 score. Steve Doyle and Skoloda advanced with a 21-3 victory over Dan Belden and Bill Silver and Farrington eliminated Bob Mason and Jerry Disbrow 21-8.
Semifinal action saw Palmer and Lee edge past Heiger and Bussey 21-19, while Doyle and Skoloda stayed alive with a 21-17 victory over Silver and Farrington. The marathon playoff concluded with Palmer and Lee defeating Doyle and Skoloda by a 21-17 score.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale news
Beautiful weather resulted in a full week of golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach.
The men got things started with a nine-hole modified-Stableford system match Feb. 22. The team of Tom Lewis, Bill Leonard, John Soler and Joe Tynan grabbed first place with a combined score of plus-1.
Leonard won individual honors and contributed to his team win with a plus-5. Fred Miller was a point behind at plus-4, while Art McMillan and Quentin Talbert tied for third at plus-3.
The women played an individual low-net match Feb. 23. Flight A was captured by Sue Wheeler, who carded a 2-under-par 30 to edge Connie Livanos and Nina McSparren by a stroke.
Marty Clark fired a 5-under-par 27 to earn a two-shot victory over Pam Alvord in Flight B. Judy Todd took third place with a 2-under-par 30.
A 2-under-par 30 by Laurie Hicks gave her first place in Flight C by a stroke over Terry Westby. Peggy Clauhs was alone in third at 2-over-par 34.
The weekly action at the club wound up Feb. 25 with the men playing a nine-hole shamble with 4-person teams counting the two best scores.
The team of Larry Pippel, Ken Nagengast and Bill DiMenna combined on a plus-1 to match and share clubhouse bragging rights for the day with the team of Gary Risner, Quentin Talbert, Dean Christensen and John Cassese.
