It was a busy week for players and sports enthusiasts — with outdoor activities taking the lead.
The regular season has concluded for the youth soccer league at the center and the teams can now turn their attention to the playoffs where it’s win or go home.
Moss Builders at 3-0-2 nailed down the No. 1 seed in the 8-10 division with Solid Rock Construction right behind at 3-2. Shady Lady holds third at 2-2-1, while Beach Bums and Tidy MD, both at 2-3, are fourth and fifth seeds. The Gitt Team finished 1-3-1 in sixth place.
The playoff action was set to kick off at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 with Moss and Solid Rock taking the pitch for a practice game thanks to a bye into the semifinals for both teams. Shady Lady will take on the Gitt Team in the first quarterfinal at 6:45 p.m., and Beach Bums and Tidy MD will square off in the second quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m.
The championship round is set for Oct. 26.
Meanwhile, the four team, 11-14 division has another week of regular-season action so there’s still some possible movement up and down the standings.
Action Oct. 5 for the 11-14s kicked off with Blalock Walters cruising to a 6-3 victory over HSH Designs behind four goals from Andrew Graham and two from Jayden Sparks. Mason Moss added a pair of assists while Cale Rudacille made five saves in goal.
Sterling Holiday and Carter Eurice each scored to lead HSH Designs, which also received four saves from Jack Zaccagnino in the loss.
The second 11-14 division match saw Miz & Hiz Biz outscore Anna Maria Island Wines 4-3. Riley Lawson led the way with two goals, while Chad Nunez and Cecelia Kroth added a goal each in the victory.
Nixon Conner had two goals and an assist for AMI Wines, which also received a goal from Victor Albrecht and nine savres from Cyrus Ryan in the loss.
Action in the 8-10 division saw Beach Bums earn a 3-0 shutout victory over Shady Lady behind two goals from Dylan Sato and a goal and an assist from Turner Worth. Kason Davis helped preserve the shutout with nine saves in goal.
Cole Dillman came up with six saves between the pipes to help keep Shady Lady in the game.
Solid Rock held on for a 4-3 victory over the Gitt Team behind four goals from Nixon Conner and five saves from Andre Harwood.
Noah Shoulson scored two goals and Colin Bankert added a goal for The Gitt Team in the loss.
The last game of the night for the 8-10s saw Moss Builders roll to a 6-1 victory over Tidy MD thanks to two goals each from Mason Moss and Callin Westfall. MaryTess Bolognone and Landon Sinphay each chipped in with a goal in the victory.
Jesse Zaccagnino notched the lone goal for Tidy MD, which also received six saves from Conrad Elmore in the loss.
Adult basketball plays out indoors
With one week remaining in the adult basketball league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, Moss Builders and Paddy Wagon are on top of the standings with matching 5-1 records, but Moss Builders gets the lead on the standings tiebreaker thanks to a 49-44 victory in week three. Beach Bums follows in No. 3 with a 4-2 record, while Solid Rock Construction holds down fourth on a 3-3 record. Slim’s Place is 2-4, while Sandbar Restaurant and Blue Lagoon are 1-4.
Action Oct. 4 got started with Paddy Wagon edging Solid Rock Construction 73-71 behind 20 points from Andy Shown and 14 points from Jeremi King. Jay Terry chipped in 10 points and Trey Yarn finished with 9 points in the victory.
Dom Otteni led all scorers with 25 points for Solid Rock, while teammates Jaemaal Newson and Connor Haughey added 14 and 13 points respectively.
The second game of the night saw Blue Lagoon cruise past Slim’s Place 50-39 for Lagoon’s first victory of the season. Trey Joyner led all scorers in the victory with 25 points, while Kevin Roman added 9 points and Tim Holly chipped in 6 points.
AJ Colegiovanni scored 14 points for Slim’s Place, which also received 5 points each from Wade Carter and Garrett Richelieu in the loss.
The last game of the evening saw Moss Builders outscore Sandbar 56-31 behind a balanced scoring attack that saw four players score in double figures; Karri Stephens 16, J.B. Shuck 12, Ryan Moss 11 and Zack Long with 10 points.
Austin Henderson scored 13 points for Sandbar, which also received 6 points each from Chase Richardson and Matt Manger in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
Action for the men at the Key Royale Club teed off Oct. 4 with their regular modified-Stableford system match. Mike Pritchett won clubhouse bragging rights for the day with a plus-4, four points above his average. Second place was a three-way affair with Mike Clements, Marty Hicks and Larry Pippel all at plus-3.
The women teed up Oct. 5 for a nine-hole individual-low-net match in two flights.
Jana Samuels fired a 1-under-par 31, a stroke ahead of second-place finisher Debi Wohlers. Carol Duncan and Ellen Boin tied for third at 4-over-par 36.
A chip in on the seventh hole helped Mary Wilke to an even-par 32 and first place in Flight B. Margrit Layh and Billie Jean Pinson tied for third at 1-over-par 33.
The members played a nine-hole scramble Oct. 7 that saw three teams post 3-under-par 29s. Sharing the win were Mike Cusato, Bill DiMenna, Ed Harrell, Ron Huibers; Mike Clements, Diane Miller and Al Waal; and the team of Rod Hammonds, Gary Risner, Scott Mitchell.
Horseshoe news
The regular players gathered for a morning of horseshoe action Oct. 6 at the Anna Maria City Hall pits saw the return of Tim Sofran after a four-month absence due to back surgery. Sofran made a strong impression in his return, throwing a barrage of ringers to advance to the finals against Jerry Disbrow and Bob Heiger.
He jumped out to an early lead, but Disbrow and Heiger battled back to a 19-19 tie. Heiger then threw a double ringer for a 22-19 win.
Sofran was back in the mix for the Oct. 9 games, this time teamed up with Jerry Disbrow to post the lone 3-0 record in pool play, good for the day’s outright championship.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
