For the soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, the weather may be cool but the pitch is heated up.
After five weeks of action in the adult soccer league, Sato Real Estate sits atop the standings on a clean 5-0 record. Slim’s Place and Blalock Walters are on their heels in second place with matching 3-1-1 records, while Servis First Bank holds down fourth place at 3-2. Emily Moss Designs and the Gitt Team follow at 2-3 with Beach Bums at 1-4 and Sandbar Restaurant completing the standings at 0-5.
Action Nov. 4 kicked off with Servis First Bank handing Slim’s Place its first loss of the season by a 2-1 score. Ugur Dumaz and Erica Nielson each scored to lead Servis First Bank, which also received an assist from Mauricio Vargas and a combined eight saves from Oswaldo Cabello and Olaf Krause in the victory.
Jessica Williams notched the lone goal for Slim’s Place on an assist from Tyler Brewer, while Tuna McCracken posted nine saves in the loss.
Emily Moss Designs cruised to a 4-2 victory over the Gitt Team behind two goals and an assist from Kevin Roman and a goal each from Lindsey Styka and Connor Haughey. Ryan Moss helped preserve the victory with six saves.
Ed Monzon scored a pair of goals to lead the Gitt Team, which received four saves from Raul Loria.
Blalock Walters rode a hat trick from Chris Scott to a 5-2 victory over Sandbar in the evening’s third match. Matthew Staggs chipped in with a pair of goals, while Matt Plummer added an assist and Greg DeMeuse made five saves in goal.
Teddy Louloudes and Jake Parsons each scored a goal to lead Sandbar, which also received an assist from Steve Oelfke and eight saves from Jessica Rueberg in the loss.
Sato closed out action for the night with an easy 5-2 win over Beach Bums thanks to a hat trick from Will Kretzman and a goal each from Daniel Anderson and Greg Ross.
Robert Fellowes had a goal and an assist and Logan Richelieu scored for Beach Bums, which also received five saves from Mark Long in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Three teams emerged from pool play during Nov. 3 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits and battled for the day’s bragging rights in a three-team playoff.
Tim Sofran and Bob Palmer drew the lucky bye into the finals and watched as Norm Good and Jerry Disbrow eliminated Tom Skoloda and Steve Kreibel by a 21-9 score. Finally, Good and Disbrow stayed hot to defeat Sofran and Palmer 21-14, earning a trip to the winner’s circle.
The Nov. 6 games were a two-team affair that saw Tom Farrington walk past Bob Heiger and Skoloda 24-7 to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
There was a full week of golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach last week starting with the men’s nine-hole modified-Stableford match Nov. 1. Herb Clauhs grabbed clubhouse bragging rights for the day after carding a plus-6 — six points higher than his average point total. Ken Nagengast and Terry Tarras were two points back in a tie for second place.
The team of Dale Hudson, Fred Miller, Dave Richardson and Bob Soos combined on a plus-2 to win the team competition.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match in two flights Nov. 2 that saw Linda Dorsey fire a 1-under-par 31 to grab the top spot in Flight A by two strokes over Brenda Solleveld and Pam Lowry, who both finished at 1-over-par 33 and tied for second.
Pam Alvord carded an even-par 32 to win first place in Flight B. Sue Christenson was alone in second place at 2-over-par 34.
The team of John Baker, Clint Hurdle, Hoyt Miller and Tom Nelson matched the 3-under-par 29 carded by Dean Christensen, Buddy Foy, John Kolojeski and Mike Riddick for a two-way tie for first place and, we’re not sure who purchased the libations.
