The adult 3-v-3 basketball league’s season came to a close Dec. 11 with semifinal and championship games in the best-of-three series.
The first semifinal saw Solid Rock Construction defeat Bradenton Home Inspections 21-15, 17-20 and 22-15. Connor Morse paced Solid Rock with 19 points over three games, while Ray Gardner added 18 points.
Tom Parks paced Home Inspections with 28 points, while Andrew Simonetti added 12.
The second semi-series saw Slim’s Place sweep Island Lumber 22-17, 17-15 to advance to the finals. Corey Jaques led Slim’s with 17 points over the two games, while Jacob Munez added 8 points.
Wes Jackson led Island Lumber with 14 points and Chase Richardson added 10 points in the loss.
The championship saw Slim’s Place defeat Solid Rock Construction 22-18, 14-22 and 21-17. Jaques led Slim’s with 20 points over the three games, while Ajani Poole added 19 points in the victory.
Solid Rock’s Gardner led all scorers with 26 points over the three games, while teammate Karri Stephens finished with 11 points in the loss.
Winter break will bring a pause to center sports.
Key Royale golf news
There was a full week of golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach starting Dec. 8 with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford system match.
Mike Clements took first place with a plus-5, two points ahead of Herb Clauhs, Doug Kristensen and Tom Solosky, who finished in a tie for second place.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match Dec. 9 in two flights.
Pam Lowry took first place in Flight A with a 2-over-par 34, one stroke ahead of second-place finisher Ceal Barry. Linda Dorsey was alone in third place with a 6-over-par 38.
Jan Turner rode a chip-in on the eighth hole to a 3-under-par 29 and a first-place finish in Flight B. Sue Wheeler was a stroke back in second, while Carol Patterson took third with a 1-under-par 31.
The roster was 48 players Dec. 10 for the annual Key Cup Tournament. The event format is similar to the Ryder Cup with two teams of 24 players playing two nine-hole match-play events.
The Red team prevailed over the Greens 13 1/2 to 10 1/2 with the winning team members each receiving a coveted drinking cup.
Helen Pollock won the closest-to-the-pin contest on the third hole, knocking the ball 22 feet 8 inches from the pin. Bob Rowley won for the men with a shot that settled 12 feet 1 inch from the pin.
On the eighth hole, Dolly Darishs hit her shot to within 25 feet of the pin to win the women’s contest, while Rob Perkins hit his shot 11 feet 2 inches from the pin to win the men’s contest. Debi Wohlers was a surprise winner of the women’s long drive contest, while Brian Hogan won among the men.
Following the event, everyone enjoyed lunch on the patio.
Members closed out the week of golf with a nine-hole scramble Dec. 11. The team of David Derosiers, Marty Hicks, Jack Lowry and Brenda Solleveld combined on a 3-over-par 35 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day. The team of Nicholas Cibel, Larry Davis, Tom Nelson and Peter Solleveld were one stroke back in second place.
Horseshoe action
Horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits got started Dec. 10 with Tim Sofran walking his way to victory. Sofran cruised to a 21-5 victory over Bob Hawks and Steve Kriebell.
Action on Dec. 13 saw Tom Farrington and Steve Doyle earn the day’s bragging rights with a 21-12 victory over Bob Palmer and Billy Silver.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits, where warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
