There was plenty of golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach, starting Jan. 5 with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford system match.
Buddy Foy grabbed clubhouse bragging rights for the day after carding a plus-5 to give him a 2-point victory over second-place finishers Rob Perkins and Bill Shuman, who both finished at plus-3 for the day.
The women played a nine-hole, individual-low-net match in two flights on Jan. 6 that saw Deb DuVernay fire a 2-under-par 30 to grab first place in Flight A. Jana Samuels came in second place at even-par 32, while Leigh Brattain was another stroke back in third place.
Susan VanOrsdel carded a 3-under-par 29 to easily capture Flight B for the day. Sue Christenson and Annette Hall tied for second at 1-over-par 33, while Jan Turner was another stroke back in third place.
Helen Pollock had a chip-in on the ninth hole to highlight her round.
Members played a nine-hole scramble Jan. 8 to close out the week of golf. The team of Bruce Christenson, Deb DuVernay, Jeff Harold and Tom Solosky matched the 4-under-par 28 carded by the team of Dave DuVernay, Bob O’Brien and Deb and Dave Richardson to finish in a tie for first place.
The real news of the day came when Mike Clements recorded his first career hole-in-one during the round.
Using his driver, Clements aced the 186-yard fourth hole.
Congratulations to Clements, who treated all the golfers at the clubhouse after the round.
Meanwhile, over at the horseshoe pits at Anna Maria City Hall, two teams emerged from pool play with the requisite 3-0 record and settled things in a playoff during the Jan. 7 AMI Pitchers horseshoe competition.
Tom Farrington and Bob Hawks cruised to a 23-4 victory over John Poccynek and Tom Skoloda to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Hawks found himself back in the winner’s circle Jan. 10, this time teaming up with Bob Lee to post the only 3-0 record in pool play.
Play gets started at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
