Golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach got started March 2 with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford system match combined with a skins game.
First place was shared by Jim Bailey, Joe Coyne, Charlie Porter and Ron Vandeman, who all carded plus-5s. Bailey, Bob Rowley, Peter Solleveld and Al Waal each won skins.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match in two flights on March 3 that saw Lisa Edmonds fire a 5-under-par 27 to win Flight A while holding off second-place finisher Helen Pollock. Pollock, who had a chipin birdie on the fifth hole, took second place with a 4-under-par 28, while Jana Samuels was alone in third at 1-over-par 33.
Gloria LaDue captured first place in Flight B with a 3-under-par 29, one shot better than second-place finisher Billie Jean Pinson. Judy Menchek and Jan Turner tied for third place at 1-under-par 31.
Other noteworthy shots included a birdie by Rene Chapman on the hole No. 1 and chipins by Leigh Brittain, Margrit Layh and Gloria LaDue.
Members played an 18-hole scramble/ramble combo on March 5 to close out the week that was organized golf at the club.
The team of Tony Donnelly, Steve O’Neil and Deb and Dave Richardson matched the 5-over-par 69 carded by the team of Chuck Patrick, Larry Pippel, Jana Samuels and Peter Solleveld to finish in a tie for first place.

Three teams emerged from pool play with 3-0 records and settled things in a playoff during March 4 horseshoe action with the AMI Pitchers at the Anna Maria City Hall pits.
The team of Tim Sofran and Tom Anderton drew the lucky bye into the final and watched as Gersey Fernandes and Bo LaMura eliminated Steve Doyle and Tom Farrington 26-8.
The finals saw Sofran and Anderton cruise to a 21-11 win over Fernandes and LaMura to win the day’s proceedings.
Two teams advanced to the playoffs during the March 7 games that saw Tom Farrington walk his way to the winner’s circle with a 21-7 victory over Billy Silver and Bob Brown.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays in Anna Maria at the city hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and all are welcome.
