Two teams emerged from pool play with the requisite 3-0 records and settled things in a playoff during April 29 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
Tim Sofran and Gary Howcroft held on for a 21-19 victory over Steve Doyle and John Poccynek to earn bragging rights for the day.
Action on May 2 saw three teams advance to the knockout stage. Gersey Fernandes and Herb Shutt drew the bye and watched as Billy Silver cruised to a 24-3 semifinal victory over Tom Farrington and Tom Betty. Silver stayed hot and earned an easy 23-12 victory over Fernandes and Shutt to win the day’s proceedings.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the pits, 10005 Gulf Drive. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play, and all are welcome.
Youth soccer finishes 5 weeks
After five weeks of action in the youth soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, teams are jockeying for positions for the upcoming playoffs.
The 8-10 division appears to be a battle among three teams at the top. West Coast Surf Shop and AMI Rental Cars are in a tie for first, with West Coast Surf Shop at 3-0-2 and AMI Rental Cars at 3-0-1 with a game in hand. Flip Flop Shop & Candy Stop is at 3-1. AMI Outfitters holds down fourth with a 1-1-2, while G.I. Bins at 1-4 and Isola Bella Italian Eatery at 0-1-3 are tied for fifth with Gitt Team completing the 8-10 standings at 0-4.
Action in the 8-10s kicked off April 28 with AMI Outfitters edging G.I. Bins 2-0 behind two goals from Jeremiah Raulerson on assists from Talon Almy and Judah Long. Everett Hood helped secure the win with five saves.
Liam Urbiola scored two goals and Lucas Urbiola added a goal and an assist for West Coast Surf Shop to take a 3-0 victory over Gitt Team-KW on the Water in the second 8-10 division game of the night.
Eli Roadman made two saves for Gitt in the loss.
The four-team 11-13 division looks like a two-team race between Print Wizards and Solid Rock Construction — both sporting 3-0-2 records. Moss Builders is 2-3 in third, while Le Creperie is alone in fourth with a 0-5 record.
Print Wizards and Solid Rock opened the 11-13 division action on April 28 and battled to a 1-1 tie. Jack Carroll notched the lone goal for Print Wizards, which also received six saves from Carson Long in the draw.
Aidan Guess scored the only goal for Solid Rock Construction while Elijah Roadman came through with five saves.
Moss Builders defeated Le Creperie 4-2 in the second 11-13 game of the night behind three goals from Joseph Caballero and one goal from Luca Viehman. Colten DeBerry helped secure the win with eight saves in goal.
Louis Bacon and Phoenix Harwood each scored for Le Creperie, which also received six saves from Everett Hood in the loss.
The all-girls division has AMI Rental Cars with a commanding lead in the standings, thanks to a 4-0-1 record, which puts them eight points ahead of Beach Bums and RAK’s Wings ‘N Things — both 1-2-2. Bubble Binz completes the standings with a 1-3-1 record.
Action for the girls kicked off April 27 at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., with Beach Bums cruising to a 5-2 victory over RAK’s behind five goals from Juliette Sato and six saves from goalie Ava Bishop.
Elin Bannick and Heidi Bannick each scored a goal to lead RAK’s, which also received an assist from Reagan Kesten and six saves from Loretta Hopkins in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw AMI Rental Cars roll past Bubble Binz by a 6-1 score. Ruthie Ball and Jade Ptak led the way with two goals each, while Scarlett Hoogewind and Kierstyn Darak each scored a goal.
Willo Wolfe notched the lone goal for Bubble Binz in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
Regular golf action resumed at the Key Royale Club, 700 Key Royale Drive, Holmes Beach, following a few weeks of specialty tournaments.
The men’s modified-Stableford system match got things started on April 27. Rob Ellis carded a plus-5 to edge second-place finisher Mike Cusato by a point. Third place was shared by Tom Erdle, Tom Nelson and Larry Pippel after they all finished at plus-3.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match in two flights on April 28.
The trio of Rene Chapman, Roxanne Koche and Phyllis Roe carded even-par 32s to finish in a three-way tie for first in Flight A. Linda Dorsey, Lisa Edmonds and Sue Porterfield tied for second with matching 2-over-par 34s, while Debbie DuVernay and Barb Rinckey were a stroke back in third.
Susan VanOrsdel fired a 5-under-par 27 for the low-net round of the day and first in Flight B. Jan Turner and Terry Westby tied for second with 3-under-par 29s, while Nina McSparren and Sue Wheeler tied for third at 1-under-par 31.
Members played a nine-hole scramble on April 30 to close out the week of organized golf.
The team of Jenelle Clements, Tom Nelson, Chuck Patrick and Joe Tynan matched the 3-under-par 29 carded by John Cassese, Dale Hudson, Jay Jump and Eric Lawson to finish in a tie for first place. Leigh Brattain, Mike Clements, Jack Connors and Bil Shuman tied the team of Nicholas Cibel, Julia Fay, Charlie Porter and Kurt Snouffer for second.
One Love, AMI Skim Competition on the horizon
The center is hosting a One Love, AMI Skim Competition on Saturday, June 6, at the Magnolia Avenue beach in Anna Maria.
The competition will be for various age groups, including 7-and-under, 8-12, 13-17 and 18-and-over brackets, with the event set to run 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Check-in will start at 8:30 a.m. on the beach.
The cost is $45 per participant, but space is limited, so the center is encouraging skimmers to register in advance.
