It was another event-filled week on Anna Maria Island with soccer, basketball, golf and horseshoe action filling the score cards.
After seven weeks in the adult soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, Sato Real Estate remains unbeaten with a 7-0 record, six points clear of second-place Swordfish Grill, which is 5-2. Pool America at 4-2-1 and Florida Impact Windows at 3-1-2 hold down third and fourth and complete the teams with better than .500 records. Salty Printing is 3-3 followed by 2-3-1 Anna Maria Island Real Estate, 2-4-1 Bubble Binz and Pizza Social and Duncan Real Estate, both with 2-3-1 records. Solid Rock Construction at 1-4-1 and 0-6 Ross Built complete the standings.
Action May 8 saw Swordfish Grill cruise to a 5-2 victory over AMI Real Estate behind two goals from Kevin Roman and a goal each from Nathan Donella, Chaz Heller and Lucas Wilson. Jeremy Cruz Rodriguez helped secure the victory with eight saves in goal.
Ricky Amaya scored both goals for AMIRE while Julian Bejarano made four saves in the loss.
Pool America recorded a 4-0 shutout victory over Bubble Binz in the second game of the evening, getting a goal each from Christopher Klotz, Martin Konig, Chase Richardson and Marcelo Rubio. Ian Godfrey finished with five saves in the win.
Caleb Arendt had 14 saves for Bubble Binz in the loss.
Sato held off Duncan 4-3 thanks to two goals each from Will Kretzman and Gerardo Urbiola Bolanos and nine saves from Tuna McCracken and Josh Sato.
Duncan received goals from Joey Hutchinson, Jessica Kelly and Matthew Staggs, while Danny Free made seven saves in the loss.
Salty Printing outscored Solid Rock Construction 6-4 behind a hat trick from Tyler Brewer and single goals from Chris Culhane, Ethan Hampton and Edwin Trejo. Connor Ludwig helped preserve the victory with seven saves.
Alex Landy scored a pair of goals to lead Solid Rock Construction, which also received a goal each from Daniel Hampton and Rex Kesten in the loss.
Alex Quintero scored three goals and Axel Delarosa added two goals to lead Impact Windows to an 8-4 victory over Ross Built in the last game of the night. Raul Loera added a goal and four assists, while Kali Richardson and Miguel Rodriguez finished with a goal each in the win.
Mack Heitchue scored a pair of goals to lead Ross Built, which also received a goal each from Connor Morse and Alex Villanueva, while Steve Oelfke made 11 saves in the loss.
Adult basketball news
After three weeks of action in the adult 3-v-3 basketball league, Paddy Wagon is on top with a 3-0 record, just ahead of USA Fence, Salty Printing, Bradenton Home Inspections and Gator-Man Pools — all at 2-1. Q Law Injury Attorneys follows with a 1-2 record, while Luxury Services and Mi-Box are 0-3.
The adult action on the gym court kicked off May 7 with Salty Printing defeating Bradenton Home Inspections 22-12, 16-13 behind 14 points each from Corey Jaques and Ajani Poole over the two games.
Paul Hamilton led Bradenton Home Inspections with 16 points in the losses.
The second match of the night saw Q Law sweep USA Fence 22-12, 22-17, 21-14 behind 19 points from Joe Hill and 18 points from Brendan Early.
Dewin Escobar scored 23 points for USA Fence, which also received eight points from Sequel Martinez in the losses.
Paddy Wagon defeated Mi-Box 22-19, 22-4, 22-18 in the third contest of the evening. Jeremi King scored 32 points and Diego Argandona added 26 points to lead Paddy Wagon to victory.
Logan Heath scored 18 points and Colton Heath finished with 13 points for Mi-Box in the losses.
Finally, Gator-Man Pools defeated Luxury Services 22-15, 22-13, 22-16 behind 29 points from Aaron Duduks and 24 points from Will Kretzman.
Miguel Rodriguez scored 22 points and Wesley Jackson scored 14 for Luxury Services in the losses.
Key Royale golf news
Golf action got started May 4 at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford match and a skins game.
First place and clubhouse bragging rights went to Jack Connors with a plus-4, a point better than second-place finishers Dale Hudson and Quentin Talbert. Mark Micho was alone in third at plus-2, while Brian Comer won the lone skin on the day.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match in two flights May 5.
Lori Waggoner fired a 2-under-par 30 to grab first place in Flight A. Linda Dorsey and Jana Samuels tied for second place at even-par 32, while Leigh Brattain was alone in third place at 2-over-par 34.
Susan VanOrsdel’s 2-under-par 30 gave her first place in Flight B by one stroke over Mary Ann Latham and Marilyn Manzer, while Nina McSparren and Helen Pollock tied for third at 1-over-par 33.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play with 3-0 records and settled things in a playoff during May 6 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits.
Steve Doyle and Gersey Fernandes edged Norm Good and Tom Farrington 23-17 to earn bragging rights.
There were two playoff teams during the May 9 games. Farrington and Tim Sofran held on for a 21-17 victory over Tom Skoloda to win the day’s proceedings.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and all are welcome.
Skimboard competition on the horizon
The Center of Anna Maria Island is hosting the One Love, AMI Skim Competition at the Magnolia Avenue beach Saturday, June 6.
The competition is set for several age groups, including 7-and-under, 8-12, 13-17 and 18-and-over.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with check in starting at 8:30 a.m.
The cost is $45 per participant.
Space is limited, so the center is urging competitors to signup early.
