There was a full week of sports on the island with golf, horseshoes, soccer and flag football.
Adult soccer and 35-and-over flag football leagues at the Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, celebrated champions.
Sato Real Estate was the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs and showed why by defeating No. 3 Swordfish Grill in the June 5 championship game.
Oisin Crean and Hakan Toka each scored a goal for Sato, which also received four saves from Tuna McCracken to preserve the victory.
Caleb Phillips notched the lone goal on an assist from Brandon Rolland for Swordfish Grill, which got five saves from Jeremy Cruz Rodriguez in the loss.
Sato advanced to the championship game with a 2-0 victory June 4 over Anna Maria Island Real Estate Corp. Will Kretzman notched both goals for Sato, while Hakan Toka had an assist and Tuna McCracken finished with three saves in the win.
AMIRE benefited from Julian Bejarano’s two saves in the loss.
Swordfish Grill advanced with a 3-0 semifinal victory over Pool America. Caleb Phillips, Sarah Phillips and Lucas Wilson each scored one goal and Jeremy Cruz Rodriguez made one save.
Ian Godfrey’s five saves led Pool America in the loss.
Flag football champs crowned
The 35-and-over adult flag football league’s spring season came to a close June 3 after rain delayed things.
Bradenton Home Inspections held on for a 27-19 victory over Slim’s Place for the championship win. Zach Long had a huge game for Bradenton Home Inspections, throwing three touchdown passes and running for another, while also adding seven flag pulls on defense. George Maize had six catches, including two for touchdowns, while Chad Woods finished with a touchdown and six receptions in the victory.
Jonathan Moss threw three touchdown passes to lead Slim’s Place, which also received two touchdown catches from Jesse Griffin and a touchdown catch from Mark Long in the loss.
Bradenton Home Inspections advanced to the championship game by defeating Moss Builders 25-16 in the May 27 semifinal game. Zach Long threw three touchdown passes to Chad Woods, while also adding a touchdown run. George Maize had three sacks to lead the defense, which also received seven flag pulls from Evelyn Long in the victory.
Ryan Moss threw two touchdown passes for Moss Builders, which received touchdown receptions from Brian Leibfried and Keith Mahoney in the loss.
Slim’s Place advanced to the championship game with a 26-20 victory over Solid Rock Construction in the second semifinal of the evening. Jonathan Moss threw four touchdown passes to lead Slim’s Place, which received two touchdown grabs from Mark Long and a touchdown catch each from Jesse Griffin and Ben Jones.
Steven Pavina threw for two touchdowns and added a touchdown catch, while James Roadman added a touchdown pass and reception for Solid Rock, which also received a touchdown catch from Brandin Holcomb in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
Golf action at the Key Royale Club, 700 Key Royale Drive, Holmes Beach teed off June 1 with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford match. Ed Harrel carded a plus-4 to win clubhouse bragging rights by two points over second-place finishers Dave Richardson and Quinten Talbert.
Tom Nelson won the only skin of the day on the fourth hole.
The Key Royale women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match June 2. First place went to Jana Samuels on a 3-under-par 29 — a five-shot victory. Sue Wheeler took second with a 2-over-par 34, while Helen Pollock was another stroke back in third.
Members played a nine-hole scramble June 4 with all putts counted toward the total score. The team of Leo Burke, Jeff Jump, Jana Samuels and Kurt Snouffer combined on a 4-over-par 36. The team of Ron Buck, Tom Nelson, Ron Vandeman and Steve Vasbinder were one stroke back in second.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play and settled things in a playoff during May 27 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits, 10005 Gulf Drive.
The team of Jay Disbrow and Tom Farrington cruised to a 22-8 victory over Neil Hennessey and Gary Howcroft to win the day’s proceedings.
Three teams advanced to the knockout stage during the May 30 games. The team of Howcroft and Tim Sofran drew the bye and watched as Billy Silver walked his way past Farrington and Gersey Fernandes by a 22-8 score. Howcroft and Sofran took advantage of the free pass to the finals by defeating Silver by a 21-13 score to win the day’s championship.
On June 3, Fernandes drew the walker chip and posted the only 3-0 record in pool play at Anna Maria Horseshoes and landed in the winner’s circle.
On June 6, Fernandes again drew the walker chip and went up against the other 3-and-0 team of Tom Farrington and Billy Silver in the final.
Fernandes stayed perfect for the week, taking out Farrington and Silver 24-10 to win the June 6 championship.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
