Bradenton Beach board to review cafe plan

The Bradenton Beach Planning and Zoning Board this week will resume its review of a proposed expansion of the Gulf Drive Cafe, 900 Gulf Drive N.

The city planning and zoning board will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at city hall, 107 Gulf Drive N.

Aside from the typically routine consideration of minutes from a past meeting, the only item on the agenda falls under the “old business” heading. The item is a continued public hearing regarding a proposal for a major development - and special exception request for off-site parking - for the Gulf Drive Cafe and the adjacent land on Gulf Drive North. The area, formerly the location of the Trader Jack restaurant, is the largest parcel of undeveloped property in the city, much of it a concrete slab with an unobstructed view of the water.

Architect Mike McCaleb presented a site plan for the expansion on behalf of cafe owners George and Wendy Kokolis during a March planning board meeting.

The plan calls for open-air dining, the creation of about 50 parking spaces, a dunes walk-over with Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility, public bathrooms, a multi-purpose pavilion and a dedicated public access to the near-shore site of the Regina shipwreck.
