Island Run 2005 judged success

The Sunday morning Island Run 2005 in Anna Maria City was a huge success, according to Islander Neil Longhurst, president of the Bradenton Runners Club.

There were 125 "finishers" in the 5K event, and 25 in the 1-mile fun walk, he said, adding a special thanks was due to the Kiwanis Club, Turtle Watch and Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies.

Overall winners were Bob Hammond in 18:08, 25 seconds ahead of Masters (Over 40) winner James Bumbul, and on the women's side, Rachel Arotskey in 19:15, just 10 seconds ahead of Heather Gollnick. Kim Bruce-Bumbul made it a husband and wife double in the masters category, winning with a 21:11.

Holmes Beach resident Sandy Meneley won the Grand Masters (Over 50) by a wide margin with a 21:57 time. She was the top runner in Florida in her age class at several distances in 2004.

Age group winners included Ryan Quigley of Anna Maria in Men's 20-24, and Erma McMullen of Holmes Beach in Women's 60-64. Jordan Pritchard of Holmes Beach was second in Men's 15-19.

Proceeds from the run went to the Children's Academy of Southwest Florida Inc. of Bradenton.
