Two teams undefeated in flag football
Walter & Associates Steelers in the 10-12 age division and Duffy’s Tavern Buccaneers in the adult division are the only undefeated teams remaining in the Anna Maria Island Community Center’s NFL Flag Football League.
Walter & Associates remained perfect thanks to an easy 34-7 win over Anna Maria Oyster Bar Dolphins Feb. 8, while Duffy’s Tavern defeated the Sun Falcons 22-12 in adult action Feb. 10.
Duffy’s has Jessie’s Island Store Vikings hot on its tail, closely followed by the Falcons, Martiniville Bears and Sato Real Estate Browns. Speaking of the Sato Browns, Tommy Tyrell, showing his “nose for the ball,” intercepted a pass and took it to the house to help Sato to a 19-7 victory over Walter & Associates in the adult division.
Walter & Associates also has some company at the top of the standings with Holy Cow Colts only two games back in the standings in the 10-12 AFC division, while Ross Built Vikings are 8-1 and on top of the 10-12 NFC division.
The game of the week has to be Slim’s Place Jaguars 28-27 victory over Beach to Bay Construction Rams during adult action Feb. 10. Slim’s Place was led by quarterback Larry Berrley, who passed for 233 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a two-point conversion. Three touchdown passes went to receiver Brent Luadicina, who finished with 165 receiving yards and an extra point. Jesse Brisson added 63 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Sasha Torres added an extra-point reception in the victory.
Trevor Flathman led the defense with four flag pulls, while Berrley added three pulls for the Jags, which also received two pulls from Darrin Wash in the victory.
Scott Eason threw for 160 yards and three touchdown passes, while also adding 45 receiving yards and a touchdown to lead the Beach to Bay offense. Shawn Kaleta added 69 receiving yards, two touchdowns and added an extra point to go along with a touchdown pass and 30 yards rushing. Matt Hendrix finished with 79 receiving yards, including a touchdown reception and an extra point. Aris Thompson completed the Rams scoring with an extra point reception in the loss.
Kaleta led the Rams defense with four flag pulls, while Eason finished with three pulls.
The 13-16 division game of the week saw Beach Bistro Bears slip past Bassett, Vita, Vining & Hermann Group Raiders by a 14-12 score Feb. 12 behind a strong game from Austin Ferrer. Ferrer ran for 134 yards and a touchdown and completed one pass for a touchdown to Nick Mello. who finished with 56 rushing yards.
Ferrer also led a strong defensive effort for Beach Bistro with nine flag pulls and an interception. Mello added four flag pulls, while Katie Holiday finished with two pulls in the victory.
Reese Vita passed for 111 yards and two touchdown passes, while also rushing for 29 yards to lead the Raiders offense. Danny Doyle with 37 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Michael Duffman with 25 receiving yards and a touchdown completed the scoring for the Raiders in the loss.
Hunter Parrish led the Raider defense with four flag pulls and two interceptions, while Denver Hardy and Michael Galati both finished with two flag pulls and a quarterback sack in the loss.
The 10-12 division game of the week saw Eat Here Jaguars edge LaPensee Plumbing Falcons 19-13 Feb. 12. Brad Duffman paced the Jaguars with 66 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns, while Matt Manger-DeNegris added 64 rushing yards and one touchdown. Anthony Cucci completed the Jaguar scoring with an extra point.
Duffman and Jacob Talucci paced the Jaguar defense with three flag pulls apiece, while Gavin Sentman added two flag pulls and an interception in the victory.
Levi Lengal passed for 101 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Falcons offense, which received a touchdown reception from both Steven Espy and Brianna Espy. Tyler Yavalar added 35 receiving yards and an extra point, while Henrik Hellem-Brusso finished with 56 receiving yards.
Hellem-Brusso paced the Falcon defense with nine flag pulls and a quarterback sack, while Brianna Espy and Yavalar finished with five flag pulls each in the loss.
Ethan Helvey passed for 125 yards and three touchdown passes to lead Beach Bums Seahawks to a 35-6 victory over Connelly Marine Falcons in the 8-9 division game of the week Feb. 11. Zach Fernandes, who finished with 38 receiving yards, and Tori Walter, who had 45 rushing yards and 20 receiving yards, both scored a pair of touchdowns. Hannah McCracken finished with 67 receiving yards, including a touchdown and a pair of extra points.
Daniel Sentman led all players with six flag pulls, while Ethan Helvey finished with three pulls and two interceptions. Fernandes added an interception of his own, while also contributing three flag pulls in the victory.
Trent Shackleford scored the lone Falcon touchdown and finished with 62 rushing yards, while teammate Tyler Brewer ran for a game-high 71 yards in the loss.
Katie Krokroskia led the Falcon defensive effort with five flag pulls, while Ava Zink finished with three pulls.
Horseshoe news
Only three teams emerged from pool play during Feb. 12 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Art Kingstad and Bob Brown drew a bye into the finals and watched as Leo Hutton and Pete Morden defeated Gene Bobeldyk and Robert Pyles 21-15. Hutton and Morden rolled past Kingstad and Brown by a 22-12 score in the finals.
Four teams qualified for the playoffs in the Feb. 9 horseshoe games, while the team of Leo Hutton and Don Buchholtz edged Ron Pepka and Herb Puryear 21-18 in the first semifinal. The second semifinal match saw Adin Shank and Pete Morden defeat Art Kingstad and Jerry Disbrow by the same score to advance to the finals. Hutton-Buchholtz easily dispatched Shank-Morden 21-11 in the finals.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
There was another full week of golf action at the Key Royale Club. The Feb. 11 coed scramble saw the team of Don Ledford, Jane Winegarden, Pam Alvord and Tom Warda combine to card a 14-under-par 50 to take first place. One shot back in second place was the team of Nell Bergstrom, Terry Westby, Gary Alvord and Peter Proxy.
The men played a nine-hole scramble in a cold, driving rain Feb. 10. The team of Dale Hudson, Bob Soos, Jim Helgeson and Jon Holcomb managed a 5-under-par 27 to take first place with three teams tying for second place.
Feb. 9 saw the men play an 18-hole, best-ball-of-partners game. Dale Hudson and Vince Mercadante combined for a 14-under-par 50 to edge Jim Thorton and Tom Lewis by one shot. Jim Mixon and Gino DiClemente were alone in third place at 11-under par.
The team of Dick Mills, Wade Ladue, Bill McMullin and Jimmy Stewart combined to shoot a plus-four during a Feb. 8, modified Stableford golf match. Ladue also was the individual winner at plus-three.
Rally for the Cure at club
Golfers are welcome to join members of the Key Royale Club Feb. 22 for the Rally for the Cure. For $20, it promises to be a fun-filled day of golf and fellowship to help defeat cancer.
Check in at 8:30 a.m. will be followed by a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Following the golf, players will enjoy a luncheon complete with raffles, silent auction and a prize for the person best dressed in pink.
